Christmas shopping with a difference – an online auction for Opera Australia
Australia's national opera company and Langton’s fine wine auction house have come together to launch the inaugural Opera Australia Online Auction.
Opera Australia's auctions are famous for their range of unique items and this Online Auction is no exception. Participants can bid on the chance to meet Yvonne Kenny, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and the cast of A Streetcar Named Desire, or to take singing lessons with soprano and TV personality Antoinette Halloran. There are also treats for bargain hunters, including a Tasmanian getaway, spa treatments, cosmetics and other tantalising items.
The aim of the auction is to raise essential funds to support Oz Opera's Schools Program, which introduces the magic of opera to children. This program takes live opera, specially adapted to appeal to primary school children, to public and private schools across Victoria and NSW, enabling thousands of children to experience operatic productions live in their own classrooms.
Since its inception in 1978, the Oz Opera Schools Company has performed to over 1.3 million children and has a reputation for providing one of the finest schools touring education programs offered in Australia. Oz Opera’s Schools Program is sponsored by Australia Post.
In 2009 two productions will tour: in NSW a 45 minute adaptation of Cinderella, with music by Rossini, and in Victoria, The Sound Garden, a specially commissioned work by David Montgomery. Over 80,000 students will get their first taste of opera through this program.
The Sound Garden is a remarkable opera which explores the issues of friendship, love, betrayal and regret. Catherine loves Ricardo. Unfortunately, so does Cassandra! Catherine's Valentines Day plans go horribly wrong when Cassandra uses the magic of the 'Sound Garden' to steal Ricardo away. But will all three friends be true to their hearts?
The current production of Cinderella is a recent adaptation, created in 2007-2008. The adaptation began with setting the overall story based on the fairy tale Cinderella written by Charles Perrault in 1697, then choosing selections from Rossini’s original score (the complete written-out music) and completely rewriting the libretto (the story and words). The theme of unjust oppression and triumphant reward is played out in this musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale.
The success of Oz Opera’s schools program may be judged by the hundreds of letters and drawings sent in by children and their teachers after performances, including such comments as “you have the best voice in the world” or “when I grow up I'm going to be a singer just like you”. This is a brilliant way to introduce students to the magic of opera.
Opera Australia CEO Adrian Collette commented: "The online auction is an exciting development for Opera Australia, and it reflects our commitment to ensuring that this artform can be a vibrant player in the twenty-first century. The online auction is just one of a number of initiatives using digital technology to make opera more accessible: others include our new website, music downloads, vodcasts, blogs and big screen broadcasts."
Prospective bidders need to be members of Langton's to take part, and Langton’s are offering Opera Australia auction participants a complementary one-year membership, which would normally cost $33. This gives bidders access not only to the Opera Australia treasures but also to one of the most comprehensive inventories of fine wines in Australia.
Langton's Sydney partner Andrew Caillard said, "It has often been said that wine and opera go well together, and Langton's are delighted to work with Opera Australia on this exciting new initiative. I encourage everyone to browse the auction, to bid up high, and to enjoy the full range of services that Langton's fine wine marketplace can offer. It is, after all, just in time for Christmas!"
Auction is now open and closes on Monday 15 December at 6.00pm.
