Langton’s sells Australia’s most valuable private wine cellar
Auction closes Tuesday 22nd December
One of Australia’s most significant and valuable private wine collections has been listed for sale.
The catalogue which comprises many of the world’s greatest, rarest and important wines, is expected to generate enormous interest across the fine wine world.
“The sheer quality, range of wines and scale of this single cellar is exceptional,” says auction head Stewart Langton. “It reflects a single minded pursuit for the best wines of the world. This auction catalogue is like a great stamp collection; almost every important wine post code is represented including Chateau Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac, Bordeaux), Leroy (Vosne Romanee, Burgundy), Etienne Guigal (Rhone), Zind Humbrecht (Alsace), Gaja (Piedmonte), Vega Sicilia (Ribera del Duero), Te Mata Estate (Hawkes Bay, New Zealand) and Wendouree (Clare Valley, South Australia).
This 1000 case+ collection is everything you would not expect of an investment-type cellar! It represents a highly personal and whimsical life of fine wine enjoyment. The catalogue is a remarkable narrative of wine collecting over the last forty years; an early interest in Australian red wine, a fascination with Bordeaux and a heartfelt connection with Burgundy in later life. Along the way, he has discovered the extraordinary wines of Vega Sicilia, Antonio Gaja, Domaine Tempier, Dienhard and Dr Loosen etc.
This cellar is completely unique in the Australian context. It is arguably the greatest international wine cellar ever to come on the Australian wine market. Indeed this private collection is perhaps one of most extensive in the world; the number of lots in this single sale may well deserve a listing in the Guinness Book of Records!"
The seller has been fastidious in the extreme. All his wines have been stored in his own private state-of-the-art refrigerated/ humidified cellars, held at a constant 12 degrees celsius since purchase.
This important and unique wine auction represents an ideal opportunity for buyers to add wines of great quality and provenance to their own cellars. The sale comprises a wide range of cellaring and ready-to-drink wines at estimates and lot-sizes to suit every budget.
Highlights include a rare offering of Hardy’s Private Bin and Seppelt red wines from the 1960s and 1970s, complete dozens of 1975 Wendouree Shiraz, a vast collection of Grand Cru Burgundy from Armand Rousseau, Domaine de La Romanee Conti, Domaines des Comtes Lafon, Henri Jayer, Leroy, Thomas Moillard, Mongeard Mugneret and Georges de Vogue etc, stellar vintages of Guigal La Mouline and La Landonne, Chapoutier, JL Chave, Paul Jaboulet, and Chateau de Beaucastel, a comprehensive collection of Bordeaux from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s including Chateau Ausone, Chateau Cos d’Estournel, Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Leoville Lascases, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Pichon-Longueville Lalande etc, and a litany of great vintages from Antonio Gaja, Ornellaia, Isole e Olena, Vega Sicilia, Hugel, Kuentz-Bas, SA Huet and Trimbach etc.
This incredible treasure trove of wine riches from a private collector, cellared in optimum conditions since original purchase, is now open for sale.
The Auction closes 6pm on Tuesday 22nd December (Eastern Australian Summer Time)
