Langton's Classification of Australian wine began as a small list of wines published essentially to provoke debate and interest in the emerging Australian fine wine market. The origin of the first Langton's Classification of Australian wine came from a list first published in 1990 as Langton's Vintage Wine Price Guide. It was based initially on an overall impression of the market but was later revised and incorporated into the Langton's Classification of Distinguished Australian Wine I published in 1991.
This first Classification of 34 wines was loosely modelled on the Bordeaux Classification of 1855 and had as criteria a minimum of 10 years of vintage and a consistent record on the secondary market. From the beginning it was very important that the Classification be able to evolve (unlike its European counterpart). From a historical point of view, this original Classification helped many international and Australian wine investors better understand Australian fine wine and became for many, a 'form guide' with which to start a collection.
In 1996 a revised Classification comprising 63 wines was published as Langton's Classification of Distinguished Australian Wine II. This new Classification arrived at an important time for the Australian Wine industry. Australian wines and winemakers had gained a formidable international reputation for quality through technological innovation. In addition, five years on, the wine investment market was considerably more mature. This maturation of the overall wine industry was mirrored in the more expansive Classification II. The inclusion of 17 White wines and 43 Reds represented almost a doubling of wines from Classification I. Whilst vintage port was still included, this new Classification highlighted the rise of Australian Chardonnay and the emerging collectability of Australian red wines.
The millenium year ushered in a time of great expectation and confidence for Australia. The immensely successful Sydney Olympics was helping to place Australia firmly on the international stage. At the same time the Australian wine industry buoyed by several years of immense growth and success on the export markets was expanding rapidly. Langton's Classification of Australian Wine III reflected this confident, dynamic period of growth with its inclusion of 89 wines. New entrants including Giaconda and Bass Phillip highlighted the rise of small producers from emerging regions such as Beechworth and Gippsland. The decline of the fortified wine market was also reflected in the absence of vintage ports in this new Classification. The importance of Shiraz in this revised Classification and the emergence of the Barossa as a region of note foreshadowed the direction the Australian wine industry would take in the coming decade.
2005 marked the fourth revision of Langton's Classification of Australian wine. By this time it was already viewed both domestically and internationally as the 'form guide' for Australia's fine wine. Now including 101 wines, the Classification underscored the strength and broad appeal of Australian Shiraz and foreshadowed the emerging interest in small production single vineyard wines. The increased confidence in the ageing ability of Australian wines including Clare Riesling and Margaret River Cabernet was also highlighted in Classifcation IV.
Langton's Classification of Australian Wine V signposts another new era in the Australian fine wine market. Expanded to include 123 wines, Classification V reflects the rich diversity of Australia's wine regions and highlights the increasing importance of provenance and individual vineyard sites. Always controversial, it will undoubtedly continue to inspire much needed debate, a debate that is vital to the growth and evolution of the Australian Wine industry.
