Published annually. This was once the most important wine guide in Australia. Formula
driven, the ratings of each vintage in the book are really from the producer’s perspective.
The rating of the producer is useful information but sometimes does not match with
the wine investment market. Bradley allows some producers to have themselves on.
Ludicrous values are attached to many if not most of the wines. They are top retail
prices and do not really reflect secondary market values, the main bourse for selling
mature wine. |

Published annually. An incredibly useful guide that carries enormous weight. This
guide is always reliable and totally beyond reproach. The grading of wineries is
particularly useful, not to mention the asides on many of the wines. Given that
the secondary market is generally very conservative, this is the first book to buy
off-the-shelf.

This book looks back at several vintages of benchmark Australian wines. Although
wine evolves over time, experience shows that quality is inherent. If the wine is
ordinary when young, it is often ordinary when aged. As Halliday says, "It hardly
needs to be said, but do you remember the old adage that there are no great old
wines, only great bottles. To share in a great bottle is a privilege; to encounter
a poor one is sad, but an inevitable part of exploring old wine." Halliday is a
reliable and extremely experienced wine taster. This is an essential reference.

His is not an investment cellar, more a treasure trove of great wines and personal
favourites. His first chapter ‘Wine Collecting' has as a subheading ‘a communicable

Published annually. On the bestseller list, this book is immensely and rightly popular.
It’s aimed at wine drinkers and gives the whole gamut of the Australian wine industry
a go. Sadly Hooke’s co-author Mark Shield died in 1998. While this book will continue
to provide independent and critical reviews, Shield’s quirky, idiosyncratic scribblings
will be missed. Ralph Kyte-Powell, a fine Melbourne wine writer best known in The
Age newspaper, has taken up Shield’s baton for this year’s edition. |

For those wine investors with no idea about Australian wine, this is the best book
currently available. It is self published and written by Patrick Iland, a senior
lecturer in wine at the University of Adelaide, and Peter Gago, a senior winemaker
and spokesperson for Southcorp. They explain things beautifully and simply without
the underlying ego found in so many other publications. |

Published annually. Oliver has a lot of experience with these wines and this book
is consequently very authoritative. The section ‘What is a Wine Worth' skilfully
avoids the critical issue of determining price. Secondary market values are in fact
the definitive base values for wine. Politics and commercial reality forces Oliver
to take a soft approach. His wine rankings are interesting, but are at times difficult
to relate to the secondary market. On the other hand, some of these rankings, coupled
with vintage rankings, could well point towards potential investment wines. Certainly
one of the most relevant books to the fine wine market. This is a very useful, if
not essential guide to Australian wine. |
