Stock markets are all down but Penfolds reds are up! Langton’s Penfolds Wine Auction at www.langtons.com.au comprises some of Australia’s greatest and rarest vintages including 1955 Grange Hermitage a celebrated “wine of the century” and 1962 Bin 60A Cabernet Shiraz one of “the top ten wines to try before you die”.
The online sale, which closes on Monday 18th August at 6pm, comprises a complete and valuable collection of Penfolds Grange 1951-2002 (estimate $140-180,000), very rare Grange Imperials 1998 ($50-70,000) and 1985 ($16-20,000), rare experimental bottles including 1951 Bin 1 Grange ($40-55,000) and almost the entire catalogue of Penfolds wines post 1951. It is a remarkable offering that follows – through a list of superb wines – the history, development and contemporary wine making philosophies of a great wine producer. Price estimates range from around $15 a bottle to over $50,000!
Stewart Langton, Managing Director says, “We expect significant buyer interest from all over Australia and overseas, especially from wine collectors, wine traders and restaurateurs. There is a growing market for bottle-aged Penfolds wines. Penfolds has a long track record of performance, recorded histories of tastings, and plenty of anecdotal stories and experiences. Buyers know exactly what to expect and what to pay. Many of the wines in this auction are near or ready to drink with estimates offering excellent value to ordinary wine drinkers.”
All the famous wines are included: Penfolds Grange Shiraz, Yattarna Chardonnay, Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, RWT Shiraz, St Henri Shiraz, Magill Estate Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 389 Shiraz Cabernet, Bin 28 Shiraz and Bin 128 Shiraz.
All the great vintages are represented: 1953, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1983, 1986, 1990, 1991, 1996, 1998, 2002 and 2004.
Many of the increasingly rare experimental wine and one off releases are also featured: 1962 Bin 60A Cabernet Shiraz, 1967 Bin 7 Cabernet Shiraz, 1973 Bin CC Cabernet Sauvignon, 1980 Bin 80A Cabernet Shiraz, 1982 Bin 820 Cabernet Shiraz, 1990 Bin 90A Cabernet Shiraz, 1990 Bin 920 Cabernet Shiraz, 1996 Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004 Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2004 Bin 60A Cabernet Shiraz.
Buyers wishing to participate in this special auction can view or download the catalogue and bid online at www.langtons.com.au.
Andrew Caillard, Master of Wine and auctioneer says, “There is no other Australian wine company with such a portfolio of great vintages. In the auction world Penfolds has as much currency and market prestige as Chateau Latour or Chateau Lafite. The only difference is that it has wider and more democratic appeal. Penfolds is for everyone. Max Schubert – the creator of Grange – once described his wine as ethereal and buoyant. It is an unmistakable house style of fruit sweetness and generosity that permeates through the entire Penfolds portfolio and into the mindset of Australian wine collectors.”
Penfolds, especially Grange, has always performed reliably well through the thick and thin of the secondary market. Collectors and wine enthusiasts have a strong affection for the wines. Even with changes in ownership, Penfolds has maintained a strong production focused image where quality, consistency and heritage are seen as vitally important. It’s a great reputation to have – especially in times of uncertainty.
Note: Langton’s Penfolds Wine Auction coincides with the launch of the 2008 Penfolds Red Wine Recorking Clinic Programme in Sydney and the release of the 6th edition of Penfolds “The Rewards of Patience” by Andrew Caillard, the ultimate guide to Australia’s most highly regarded winemaker.
