The leading winemakers taking part in Langton’s Great Estates of WA sales were each asked the same set of questions. Their answers make for interesting reading. Here are the responses we have had back – from Stuart Pym, Vanya Cullen, Michael Kerrigan, Bob Cartwright, Clive Otto, Cliff Royle and Jurg Muggli.

What are you currently reading?
– Baudolino by Umberto Eco
What are you listening to?
– Shine by Daniel Lanois
What is your best wine experience?
– 90 Margaux. It just beat off the 82 Petrus on the same night, although the 89 Ramonet Bienvenue Batard Montrachet was also very good. Leroy Richebourg was not in the race and the 82 Grange should have been scratched.
What are you currently angry about in the world of wine?
– Corks and slack staff.
What are you happiest about?
– Champagne
What one word describes your wine (barrel for auction) the best?
– Finesse
Which winemaker – outside WA – do you most admire?
– Bruno Giacosa
If you had a great old bottle to share – say a 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild – who would you share it with and why?
– Janice McDonald and Stella the Irish Wolfhound. I share all my great wine with them. Cliff Royle might also get a guernsey.

– Bach, Vivaldi,R. Strauss, Rene And Bryn Sissel, Santana, Le Chat Noir and lots more!!!!

– 1865 Lafite Double Magnum

– Marketing
What are you happiest about?
– German Reisling 2001 Vintage
What one word describes your wine (barrel for auction) the best?
– Perfumed

– Geoff Grosset and Stephanie Toole

– Close friends who love wine, fun and are fun because the best moments are made even better by sharing.
Michael Kerrigan – Howard Park

– The Life of Pi by Vann Martel and the Phantom
What are you listening to?
– The Wiggles
What is your best wine experience?
– Freshly fermented Mosel out of the barrel.
What are you currently angry about in the world of wine?
– The minority of players in the game that with their methods of business have the potential to destroy in a short time the goodwill the industry has built up over the years.
What are you happiest about?
– That I can drink my work.

– Texture

– Phillip Laffer

– Leith, my wife – because she is.

– Robert Ludlum The Janson Directive
What are you listening to?
– Inspiration 2 (a compilation of relaxation music)
What is your best wine experience?
– A vertical tasting of a single vintage of Domaine Ramonet of the various appellations from village wine to Le Montrachet.
What are you currently angry about in the world of wine?
– Cork taint (just having been overseas and taken a couple of special bottles with to open them and find them ruined by TCA)
What are you happiest about?
– The wonderful flavours in the grapes in Margaret River
What one word describes your wine (barrel for auction) the best?
– Longevity
Which winemaker – outside WA – do you most admire?
– Phillip Jones from Bass Phillip
If you had a great old bottle to share – say a 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild – who would you share it with and why?
– John Brocksopp. In our long association together we shared many a good bottle at vintage.
Clive Otto – Vasse Felix
What are you currently reading?
– The Shameless Diary of an Explorer- a story of failure on Mt. McKinley by Robert Dunn.
What are you listening to?
– Jazz Bistro, Diana Krall, Cold Play, Jack Johnson, Beth Orton, Nina Simone, The Pogues, Wilco, Ben Lee, The Waifs, David Grey.
What is your best wine experience?
– Recently at a dinner in Jakarta – white truffles with Pio Cesare Wines from Piedmont. A 1961 Bordeaux tasting.
What are you currently angry about in the world of wine?
– Wines that pretend to be from a particular region and they are not!
What are you happiest about?
– New regions that add to the diversity to the world of wine like Central Otago.
What one word describes your wine (barrel for auction) the best?
– Sumptuous

Paul Draper of Ridge, Santa Cruz Mountains of California.

– My friends Mark and Vikki Messenger, Mike Gadd and Virginia Wilcock, Bridget Tighe, Brad Weir and Elvis.

– Drinking a '69 Chateau D'Yquem out of a belly button
What are you currently angry about in the world of wine?
– Corks and irresponsible wine journalism
What are you happiest about?
– Screw caps and the move away from alcoholic, over-maloed, oaky wines with raisined, dead fruit to elegant more refined styles of wine.
What one word describes your wine (barrel for auction) the best?
– Investment

– Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda

– Someone who would appreciate it... and could contribute a wine equally as unique.

– Werner Stucky (Rivera, Switzerland)
If you had a great old bottle to share – say a 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild – who would you share it with and why?
– From a winemakers point of view, I would share it with my team to taste something so very special (hopefully still alive) to acknowledge their great efforts and to inspire us all for an exciting future. Personally, I would be delighted to enjoy a historic bottle like this with my new partner for a very special moment.
