Rarest Grange collection to be sold at auction
Lot 1618
A rare “vertical” of 1971-2001 Penfolds Bin 95 Grange has been listed for auction by Langton’s.
This one-of-a-kind collection is expected to attract significant interest from collectors from around the world. With a pre-sale estimate of $50,000 to $70,000, and comprising 31 magnums (1.5 litre bottles), it represents an extraordinary period of Australian winemaking innovation and further adds colour to the Grange story.
Penfolds only produced Grange magnums from the 1979 vintage onwards. This collection, each magnum in its own timber box, was pulled together by combining a complete commercially released set (1979-2001) with additional single magnum bottlings of 1971 to 1978 vintages.
The distinguished wine judge and vigneron Len Evans (1930-2006) persuaded John Duval, Penfolds Chief Winemaker at the time, to donate this entire collection for the Len Evans annual charity golf event in 1996.
Each of the eight extra magnums possess an additional slip-label; “Grange has been produced in Magnum since the 1979 vintage. This magnum has been specially prepared for the A.A.P Group Financial Markets Len Evans Annual Charity Golf Event, by carefully decanting two 750ml bottles into the magnum bottle under the supervision of Penfolds Winemakers.”
This unique lot was purchased by an avid Grange collector and has been cellared in temperature-controlled conditions.
Andrew Caillard, MW, fine wine principal of Langton’s says “There is no other Penfolds Grange collection like this in existence. These official magnum bottlings of 1971-1978 are “one-offs” and bring extraordinary rarity and distinction.
“They are rarer than Penny Blacks, Fabergé eggs, bottlings of 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, and 1961 Ferrari Spyders. We believe that this extraordinary set is the first and last of its kind,” Mr Caillard said.

About Penfold’s Grange
Penfolds Bin 95 Grange, Shiraz is Australia's preeminent first growth. The ideas and techniques developed by Max Schubert and his team would irrevocably change the landscape of Australian wine. Over sixty years on, the "Penfolds method" has become a widespread Australian winemaking practice. Penfolds Grange is a very perfumed, concentrated wine which combines the intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of shiraz with the fragrance and complementary nuances of new, fine-grained American oak. Partial barrel fermentation takes place at the tail-end of primary fermentation. It weaves the two elements together producing a ‘meaty’ complexity and roundness of flavours on the palate. A portion of cabernet sauvignon is used in some years to enhance the aromatics and palate structure. After vinification the wine is matured in new American oak hogsheads for a period of around 20 months. The best vintages have a lasting quality of over fifty years.
