It’s always nerve-racking opening a special bottle of wine from your cellar - especially if it has been tucked away for 15 or 20 years, quietly gathering dust, waiting for the right moment. Will it be in good condition after all these years? Will it live up to the occasion – the special birthday, anniversary or promotion? The expectations are high and the gamble is big. The crushing disappointment that comes from opening a faulty bottle can spoil the happiest of occasions. Wouldn’t it be great if you could find out ahead of time if your wine was in good condition? If your special bottle of wine in the cellar is a Penfolds you’re in luck, as this year Penfolds is hosting their recorking clinics.
Every two years Penfolds hosts a series of red wine re-corking clinics across the country. Essentially a health check for Penfolds wines 15 years old or older, it’s a chance for anyone who owns an old bottle of Penfolds red wine to find out how it is evolving. Recorking is a delicate art. The clinics are staffed by experienced Penfolds winemakers who will inspect the wine and if necessary, gently open and evaluate it. If the wine is found to be sound, typical of its vintage and style, it will ‘pass clinic’. The bottle will be topped up with a recent vintage of the same wine, recorked and provided with a new Penfolds capsule. Every year the diversity of wines brought in by individuals and collectors is astounding – with many rare wines from the 50’s and 60’s providing an amazing glimpse into vinous history.
Whether you are an avid collector or just have one special bottle saved, the Penfolds Clinic is a wonderful opportunity to have your wine assessed.
