Tucked away in the rural Castilian countryside several hours north of Madrid, lies a winery of almost mythical status - Vega-Sicilia. Its unique geographical isolation far-removed from the well-trodden tourist trail, has ensured that it has retained its special aura over so many years. The 148 year-old winery in the heart of Ribera del Duero has earned a reputation for producing some of the most highly-regarded and long-lived wines on the planet. Their limited international availability has only added to their mystique. Today Langton’s is delighted to announce a very special single vendor auction featuring the wines of Spain’s very own super-star winery, Vega-Sicilia.
Founded in 1864, the winery was planted to many of the Bordeaux varieties fashionable at the time including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Carmenère. Today however, the 250 hectares of vineyards are primarily planted to Tempranillo (called locally Tinto Fino or Tinto Pais), with the Bordeaux varieties playing a supporting role in the various blends.
Vega-Sicilia produces three wines: the Valbuena 5 ano (made from younger vines and released after 5 years) the flagship Unico Gran Reserva (produced only in great years and released after a minimum of 10 years ageing )and the top wine - the Reserva Especial, a non-vintage wine produced from a blend of the very best years.
At the heart of Vega-Sicilia, is a fastidious no-compromise winemaking philosophy that is focused exclusively on quality. In practice this means the vineyards are dry-grown and green harvesting is employed to ensure yields are deliberately low. Harvesting is done by hand, with sorting tables employed to ensure only the best quality grapes reach the winery. This combination of low yields and meticulous selection means annual production is small, with less than 7000 cases of the Unico Gran Reserva produced each year. In poor vintages, the winery does not produce any Unico at all.
The uncompromising winemaking philosophy also extends to the elevage of the wines. Both the Valbuena 5 ano and Unico wines are matured in unique American oak casks produced by the winery’s own cooper. The Spanish tradition of slow oxidative maturation is entrenched in Vega- Sicilia’s own winemaking philosophy with the Valbuena spending 3 & 1/2 years in oak and the Unico a minimum of 7. The wines are then aged in bottle for a further 1 & ½ years (in the case of the Valbuena) and a minimum of 3 years for the Unico.
The result of all of this careful and patient maturation, are wines of extraordinary complexity, structure and exceptional longevity.
Vega-Sicilia is Spain’s undisputed star, and the wines have consistently garnered international acclaim underpinning its legendary status. Our single vendor auction features an impressive catalogue of back vintage Vega-Sicilia, all brought into the country directly from the winery. These include Valbuena 5 ano 2002, 2003, 2005 & 2006, Unico Gran Reserva 1991, 1995, 1999, 2000 & 2002 & the top wine, Unico Reserva Especial NV. This single vendor auction is a very rare and special opportunity to secure some of the world’s finest wines from Spain’s super-star winery.
The Single Vendor Auction featuring the wines of Vega Sicilia will run from this Thursday September 6th, closing at 7:00 PM on Thursday September 13th 2012.
