Jessica Rowe and Andrew Daddo, two of Australia’s favourite celebrities, battled it out at Wine Australia in a bid to produce the best Shiraz blend. A barrel (equivalent to 25 cases) of the winning blend, and a case of the runner-up’s blend, are open for bidding in Langton's Charity Auction along with ‘Five of the Best’ wines from McWilliam’s. All proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Garvan Institute to raise funds for much needed medical research.
Wine Blend-Off
Each celebrity, under the supervision of McWilliam’s winemakers Martin Cooper (2003 Qantas medal winner) and Scott McWilliam, had five minutes to create their blend from premium parcels of Shiraz (see below). The wines were then judged by Matt Skinner, celebrated sommelier from Jamie Oliver’s restaurant in London and Andrew Caillard MW from Langton’s.
Jessica Rowe’s Shiraz blend was the winning blend judged by Andrew Caillard MW and Matt Skinner. Andrew Daddo’s Shiraz blend was awarded runner-up.

All lots for Langton's Charity Auction are now open for bidding. This Charity Auction closes December 13 at 6 pm Eastern Time.
Blend-Off Components
2003 Coonawarra Shiraz
Sourced from low yielding vines planted in 1893 from the highly regarded Laira Vineyard at Brand’s of Coonawarra. This Shiraz is intensely flavoured with remarkable depth.
“Deep purple red colour. Aniseed, mulberry, blackcurrant aromas with cigar box and mocha oak characters. The palate is fleshy and richly concentrated with deep set mulberry and blackberry flavours, fine chocolatey tannins and plenty of mocha, spicy oak. Finishes slightly grippy with excellent flavour length. An opulent wine with plenty of fruit richness and generosity.” Andrew Caillard MW, Langton’s
2003 Hilltops Shiraz
An emerging region and wine style, this Hilltops Shiraz offers an excellent balance of ripeness and restraint. A full flavoured wine with savoury and spicy blood plum fruit flavours.
“Deep purple red colour. Ripe, pure blackberry, blueberry and chocolate aromas with some malt oak nuances. A very supple, fruit sweet wine with deep-set choco-berry plum flavours, fine slinky tannins and underlying malty oak characters. A chalky firm, long flavourful liquorice finish. This is a very elemental, solid wine which brings concentration, power and fruit sweetness.” Andrew Caillard MW, Langton’s
2003 Yarra Valley Shiraz
Displaying all the pepper and spice hallmarks of premium cool-climate Shiraz, this wine was sourced from one of Lillydale Estate’s premium growers in the Yarra Valley.
“Medium deep purple red colour. Very fragrant blackberry, chamomile, white pepper aromas. Elegantly structured wine with blackberry, chamomile and minerally flavours, fine sinewy tannins and a touch of savoury oak. Finishes chalky and firm. An essential blending component bringing a cooler spectrum of aromas and flavours.” Andrew Caillard MW, Langton’s
2003 Hunter Valley Shiraz
Sourced from vines planted in 1880 on Mount Pleasant’s historic Old Hill Vineyard, this wine displays the distinctive savoury characters of Hunter Shiraz.
“Deep purple red colour. Intense liquorice, redcurrant, raspberry and ginger aromas with cedar oak nuances. Well concentrated palate suffused with liquorice, plummy, redcurrant flavours, fine penetrating gravelly tannins, underlying cedar oak and plenty of flavour length. This is a classically proportioned long-lived Hunter Shiraz with lovely perfume, structure and oak complexity.” Andrew Caillard MW, Langton’s
