Langton’s 2005 Classification IV – International Reception, Predictions and Tastings
Langton’s 2005 Classification of Australian Wine IV was released in the same year as the 150th anniversary of the long established and most famous of all 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Both classifications are based on market perceptions. Langton’s Classification – however – is updated every five years to acknowledge movements in the market place. We strongly believe that Langton’s Classification should not entrench opinion nor underpin false pretences. It should embrace and acknowledge the entire market regardless of the intellectual debate.

It is interesting to note that although the 2005 Classification represents 101 wines, the actual volume of production is relatively small. If you combine the production of the five First Growth Bordeaux Chateaux at the higher estimated level of production it is around 140,000 cases. Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine represents approximately 400,000 cases. The volume of classified Penfolds wines would account for a significant percentage of this figure (around 30% volume). And of course as a total production it’s less than 50% each of some of Australia’s volume brands such as Jacob’s Creek and Yellow Tail.

Langton’s Classification is now a cornerstone of the ultra-fine Australian wine market. It is based on the actual buying patterns of our clients (over 6000 active members). Thus it transcends personal agendas, pompous glorifications and endless accolades. However it also needs to be put in context. There are a number of very fine Australian wines – with strong reputations – which, by the rules of Langton’s Classification, cannot be included. The non-vintage Tokays and Muscats of Rutherglen are just one example. The Classification however sets out to reflect fine wine market’s performance. It highlights what is valued by collectors and wine enthusiasts.

Langton’s 2005 Classification Internationally

The world-wide response to and analysis of the 2005 Classification IV has been remarkable. Clearly it continues to agitate a few people including some influential commentators. However it is increasingly seen by many observers as an unofficial honour roll of Australia’s best wines. Recently I travelled to the UK, Germany and Denmark to conduct tastings for the media from Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden Finland, Ireland and the UK. Brand Australia has been very successful in promoting and selling commercial wines into many of these markets. In recent times, however, Australia has been accused of selling industrialised, homogenised or boring wines with little character or sense of origin. In truth this criticism can be levelled at all commercial wines whether produced in Chile, South Africa or France.

The purpose of these tastings, organised by the highly motivated team of Wine Australia in Europe and the UK the promotional body of the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation, was to show or remind wine writers, opinion leaders and buyers that the Australian wine experience goes beyond day-to-day commercial wine.

Indeed the wines presented were all included in Langton’s 2005 Classification ranging from Penfolds Grange to Wendouree Shiraz and represent most of Australia’s classic wine regions and styles. As one would expect the response was varied, but a relatively high turnout suggested a genuine interest in ultra-fine Australian wine. Indeed most of these wine professionals were hugely impressed by the diversity of styles and exquisite quality of many of the wines, especially the extraordinary differences in regional Shiraz. There have been several positive press and wine blog reviews which will no doubt distil through the general fine wine community. While moving in the right direction, there is still a considerable amount of work to do. Australia evokes a sense of wonder among Europeans and Australians are generally well liked. Many Europeans have visited Australia during their gap year bringing a greater level of interest in ultra-fine Australian wine.

In London I hosted a Langton’s 2005 Classification IV masterclass with David Elswood – the international head of Christie’s Wine Department – in the Great Room at Christie’s King Street London. It was the first tutored tasting – ever – of ultra-fine Australian wine in this bastion of Euro wine-centricity. The wines comprised 2003 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling, 2002 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay, 2000 Parker Coonawarra Estate Terra Rossa First Growth, 1996 Mount Mary Quintet Cabernets, 1996 Cullen Cabernet-Merlot, 1996 Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2000 Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, 1996 Rockford Basket press Shiraz, 1996 Wendouree Shiraz, 1991 Henschke Hill of Grace and 1988 Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz. The audience of around 80 people comprised mostly collectors, a number of wine trade people and distinguished Masters of Wine including Michael Broadbent and Anthony Hanson.

While Grange, Hill of Grace and Mount Mary attracted positive response the Brokenwood Graveyard, Rockford Basket Press, Parker Coonawarra Estate First Growth and Cullen Cabernet Merlot were particularly impressive. The 1996 Wendouree – with its pristine fruit juxtaposed with muscular tannins – won considerable praise form the audience. Indeed Michael Broadbent described it as having “Mouton-like tannins”. Interestingly Wendouree attracted significant interest in Hamburg and Copenhagen as well, perhaps illustrating a penchant for more savoury and characterful styles rather than the ‘fruit bombs’ favoured by Americans.

A few months earlier Langton’s organised a wine media tasting in Melbourne to mark the launch of Langton’s 2005 Classification. Comprising 300 wines it covered approximately three representative vintages. Served blind, it allowed opinion leaders to form their own views about whether the wines ‘stacked up’ to their reputations and profile on the secondary wine market. Australian wine writers are generally not frightened of putting their views forward. Perhaps the most in depth and engaging analysis of this tasting can be found in Campbell Mattinson’s Wine Front Monthly www.winefrontmonthly.com.au.

New Wine Styles

Langton’s 2005 Classification of Australian Wine does show a strong market evolution towards single vineyard wine and regional styles such as Barossa Shiraz, Clare Riesling, Margaret River Cabernet etc. Many of these wines are made with the idea that they will evolve with time in the cellar. If anything, potential longevity of ultra-fine Australian wine, including some cult wines, is on the ascendancy. In Bordeaux there is a counter- trend where winemakers are apparently seeking concentrated palate structures to suit the Robert Parker Jr. led gout Americain. While tannin management is a major issue among Cabernet producers, it is extraordinary to see so many Bordeaux Chateaux using Burgundian wine making techniques these days.

In addition to the abandonment of traditional practices micro-oxygenisation is used extensively in St Emilion and Pomerol. There is an awful lot of human factor in the terroir argument these days. In Australia technical issues pervade the intellectual debate. The current obsession with Brettanomyces – a spoilage yeast bacteria which can add or mostly detract (in the long term) to overall quality – appears to have greater emphasis than issues relating to regional nuances or how ultra-fine Australian wine plays out in a global market. Clearly wine producers all over the world are evolving to meet the expectations of their customers. Some of these wine types are in danger of losing their identity and point of difference. It is not unlike pictures which are painted to go with the wall paper.

Crowd-pleasing homogenization is a consequence of standardization, overly technical processes, a deficit of ideas, and to some extent large scale prescriptive winemaking. The desperate search for accolades can also compromise individuality. Retail marketing thrives on wine show medals and volume stocks (not to mention wine reviews). There is plenty of choice but not really a huge amount of difference. In truth many of these wines are delicious to drink, but most do not evoke a memory of place or an idea. The marketers however will tell you otherwise. They will say that ‘Talented wine makers using state-of the-art technology and traditional craftsmanship are collecting trophies and gold medals all over the country’. The point of difference in this hard-nosed, unsentimental market is price-point and brand definition.

Ultra-fine wine generally runs on a different set of philosophies and principles. These are conversation wines which can offer consumers a more intimate and meaningful experience. By nature most of these wines are limited release type of wines – either through the realities of a defined vineyard space and/or through non-compromising selection. Reputation, track record, character and identity underpin this genre. There is a degree of price insensitivity to these wines. Indeed on the secondary market there is a strange phenomenon where increasing prices for some vintages can actually fuel demand.

The allure of some vintages can be so strong that it can pull up values within its particular regional subset. The market relationship between Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace is well documented. In more recent years Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon and Cullen Diane Madeline Cabernet-Merlot have become inextricably linked. The performance of Rockford Basket Press Shiraz and Henschke Mount Edelstone influence the pattern of bidding behaviour towards other Classified Barossa Shirazes including Grant Burge Meshach, Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz and Yalumba Octavius.

The cult wine scene also works on associations. Robert Parker Jr.’s influence on the secondary market is strong but only within a particular subset of the ultra-fine wines. These wines have polarized opinion among wine critics both in Australia and overseas. Whether you like them or not, cult wines such as Chris Ringland, Clarendon Hills Astralis, Greenock Creek Roennfeldt Road Shiraz, Kay’s Block 6, Noon Reserve Shiraz and Torbreck Run Rig have all had a profound effect on Australian winemaking adding to the diversity of the Australian wine experience. Certainly they have challenged established thought.

Some Predictions

In the early 1990s small producers emerged off the back of the Grange phenomenon by using vineyard provenance as a major selling point. Emerging cult wines – rated by Robert Parker Jr. – are more often than not next door to an established cult wine vineyard, made by a star cult winemaker or distributed by a cult wine distributor. As sure as one swallow does not a summer make, track record inevitably starts to kick in. With the benefit of a decade of secondary wine market data, we can see that market gravity applies to the cult wine scene as much as any other area of the market. While some cult wines have made inroads into the mainstream – as illustrated by their inclusion in Langton’s 2005 Classification IV – the cult wine market remains capricious, fashion conscious and impressionable. Paradoxically it is also phlegmatic and ‘street wise’. It is the only area where meaningful returns can be made within a few weeks of purchase.

The ultra-fine Australian wine market will continue to evolve in both predictable and surprising ways. The movement towards single vineyard wines and regional definition is obvious. Ultra-fine Australian wine will also enjoy stronger interest from the fine wine collector as Eurocentric wine snobbery wanes. While there is a clear divergence happening between commercial and ultra fine wine, the ultra-fine wine market may well fragment reflecting the transaction culture of the American and Asian markets and the relationship culture of European markets. Immediacy versus longevity, individuality of style versus personality of place, blockbuster versus restraint, power versus elegance and character versus composure will continue to form debate in an increasingly open minded and opinionated market place. Shiraz will remain a strong force in the foreseeable future but Cabernet will rally support again – especially form Margaret River and Coonawarra. Robert Parker Jr.’s influence will remain relatively strong although his hold will subside as investment returns waver.

New small vineyard wines from established wine regions will punctuate the mainstream markets as wine buyers seek difference and new experiences. These labels will emerge from both the cult wine scene and the mainstream markets. Both Heathcote and Beechworth will emerge as important and distinctive wine regions. Barossa Shiraz will become hugely important as collectors discover their aging potential and diversity. More ultra-fine wine will move towards screw-cap but will hinder – in the short term – penetration into the traditional collector markets outside Australia.

Langton’s Classification of Australian wine – based on the engagement and enthusiasms of a highly measurable market – is a highly democratic form guide which sets out to give an overview of Australia’s best performing wines on the secondary wine market. It does translate to both the perceptions and reality of quality. It is the distillation of highly informed market activity. That is its meaning and its strength.
