Balnaves, Coonawarra – over 20 cases available BUY NOW
The Balnaves family arrived in the Penola district from Scotland in 1854. Doug Balnaves’s family were originally shopkeepers. In 1990 Balnaves released its first wines from its own 120-acre vineyard located at the southern end of Coonawarra. The vineyard, on classic terra rossa country, is a matrix of sub-divisions each block managed according to soil profile, clonal selection and trellis system. The fruit is fermented in vinimatics and tonne open-topped static fermenters. Maturation takes place in tightly grained new and used French oak barriques (from various coopers) and hogsheads for a period of between 18 to 22 months. Balnaves is an emerging name on the secondary market. Its Cabernet Sauvignon is well regarded. Its prospects are linked to the skills of winemaker Peter Bissell and the likely resurgence of Coonawarra on the market.
Bethany, Barossa Valley – over 15 cases available BUY NOW
Strategically positioned above all its competitors, Bethany winery sits in one of the most picturesque corners of the Barossa Valley. The winery is located in an old quarry that overlooks the family vineyards and the historic hamlet of Bethany. The Schrapels have been in the Barossa for five generations. Johann Gottlob Schrapel (a Silesian immigrant) arrived in 1844, just eight years after the colony was settled. He established a mixed farm and planted a vineyard in 1852.
The oldest vines are between 60 and 80 years old, although the vineyards have turned over at least three times. Economic conditions, vine age and changing market demand affected the vineyard varietal mix.
The wines are vinified in the traditional Barossa manner with open top headed down fermenters with partial barrel fermentation and maturation for around 18 months in a mix of American and French oak (about 20% new). The GR Family Reserve Shiraz is a rigorous selection of the best fruit, batch vinified, partially barrel fermented and matured for two years in a combination of 60% new and used French medium toasted Cadoux oak. Its overall vineyard resources are some of the best in the Valley. Its Shiraz wines are highly under-valued. Bethany produces a number of commercially well-received wines.
Brokenwood Wines, Hunter Valley – over 38 cases available BUY NOW
Brokenwood was established in the early 1970s by a group of wine enthusiasts including James Halliday, John Beeston and the late Tony Albert. The winery is known for its legendary parties and spirit of place.
The winemaking philosophy harks back to traditional Barossa techniques including partial barrel fermentation but has been refined to include pre-fermentation cold soak and maturation in increasing proportions of French oak. The overall quality of its wines is excellent.
Clarendon Hills, McLaren Vale – over 53 cases available BUY NOW
Clarendon Hills is the original new breed of cult winery. Its highly controversial Astralis Shiraz polarised Australian wine critical opinion. Few believed it to be the vinous equivalent of the Second Coming - most think the style sailed close to the wind from a technical point of view. In 1994 the influential US writer Robert Parker Jr. discovered Astralis, immediately putting the cat amongst the pigeons. The wine immediately captured the attention of a generation of fine wine lovers, catapulting Clarendon Hills to fame and leaving the industry gob-smacked. By the 1998 vintage, Clarendon Hills has found a strong place in the ultra-fine wine firmament.
Cullen, Margaret River – over 30 cases Available BUY NOW
In 1966 Diana and Dr Kevin Cullen planted a trial 1-acre (now 71-acre) vineyard on their sheep and cattle property at Willyabrup in the Margaret River. In 1989 Vanya Cullen, a Roseworthy trained winemaker, assumed prime winemaking responsibilities. Her eye for detail and no-compromise approach has seen Cullen Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot emerge as one of the great Australian Cabernets. Some vintages (particularly the 1995) attract significant volume of bidding.
d'Arenberg, McLaren Vale – over 46 cases available BUY NOW
In 1912 Joseph Osborn – a teetotaller and director of Thomas Hardy and Sons (now BRL Hardy) – purchased some well-established vineyards planted in the previous century. Cellars were built in 1928 and the wine sold throughout the Empire. In the late 1950s d’Arry Osborn assumed control of the winery. His tremendous flair and focus on quality brought considerable fame to the d’Arenberg winery, one of the first cult wines in the Australian market. Its distinctive livery (a red diagonal stripe) gave the brand considerable impetus in the market. Success in the Australian wine show system (it won the Jimmy Watson Trophy) helped d’Arenberg become an important wine producer.
The wines are very consistent across vintage. d’Arenberg has a fair swag of individual wines – Old Vine Shiraz, Footbolt Shiraz and Ironstone Pressings that are also well regarded but yet to make a firm impact on the market. (d’Arry and Chester Osborn pictured.)
Fox Creek Wines, McLaren Vale – over 16 cases available BUY NOW
In 1984, Jim and Helen Watts purchased their 100-acre Malpas Road property (pictured) between McLaren Vale and Willunga. Fox Creek made an immediate impact with its Shiraz. A swag of great reviews, wine show trophies and high praise from Robert Parker Jr. for the 1996 and 1997 Reserve Shiraz and 1997 JSM Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon fast-tracked Fox Creek onto the international stage – bringing substantial interest from wine geeks all over the world.
Giaconda, Beechworth – over 32 cases available BUY NOW
Rick Kinzbrunner, a mechanical engineer who spent 10 years winemaking in New Zealand, Europe and California before settling down in Australia, established the Giaconda vineyard near Brown Brother’s old Everton Hills vineyard. His wines are quite sublime reflecting the fastidious nature of the winemaker.
Glaetzer, Barossa Valley – over 13 cases available BUY NOW
Glaetzer is one of the emerging stars of the Barossa. Although this family venture was established only in 1995, philosophically and by heritage Glaetzer is Barossa down to its boot-straps. Glaetzer Shiraz (first vintage 1996) epitomises the strong sense of place emerging in the Barossa. Glaetzer Shiraz already shows very strong regional provenance with all the class one would expect of a top Barossa Shiraz.
Greenock Creek, Barossa Valley – over 13 cases available BUY NOW
Tucked away behind Seppeltsfield, on the western edge of the Barossa, is Greenock Creek established by Michael and Annabelle Waugh in 1975. Greenock Creek is now a red-wine specialist having grafted over all of its Chardonnay vines. The whole Greenock Creek experience is one of great charm. Here is an example where intuitive and creative winemaking, together with a smattering of technical inexperience and confident enthusiasm, have combined to bring something new and unique to the Barossa.
Henschke, Eden Valley – over 20 cases available BUY NOW
During the 1950s Cyril Henschke took his family concern back to wine and established the Hill of Grace label in 1956. In truth, however, it is Stephen Henschke and his viticulturist partner Prue Henschke who have painstakingly developed the vineyard and wine since 1978.
Both the Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone vineyards, established in 1862 and the 1920s respectively, are producing Shiraz of immense purity, intensity and flavour. Prue Henschke believes that these old vines provide a critical edge to the concept of ‘distinguished vineyard site’. Henschke enjoys an incredibly strong cornerstone presence on the secondary market especially for its Hill of Grace Shiraz and Mount Edelstone Shiraz. Its overall market performance – like Grange – can be linked to general economic sentiment.
Howard Park, Great Southern – over 50 cases available BUY NOW
Howard Park, established in the mid-1980s, quickly achieved notoriety for its wines –a highly innovative and well-respected wine producer that has gained considerable success in the market place. In the late 1990s, after considerable success in the market place, Howard Park decided to move its red wine production to Margaret River to take advantage of its reputation and proximity to a larger population base.
Katnook Estate, Coonawarra – over 40 cases available BUY NOW
Katnook (an Aboriginal word meaning ‘fat land’) is the second largest vigneron in Coonawarra.Katnook Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the unique Coonawarra vineyard site and has achieved considerable support in recent years. The wine shows plenty of intense blackcurrant mulberry fruit definition, mid-palate richness, fine-grained tannins and excellent length. Katnook has enjoyed a strengthening presence on the secondary market.
Leasingham, Clare Valley – over 18 cases available BUY NOW
The Leasingham winery was purchased in 1893 when a partnership including J. Knappstein, a merchant, bought the Clare Jam Factory. BRL Hardy acquired the winery Leasingham in 1988.The Classic Clare label, however, has rejuvenated its reputation as a high-quality producer and the winery has established a fine reputation for its Leasingham Classic Clare Shiraz. The resulting wines are richly flavoured, with highly defined plum/berry fruit characters and integrated oak. These wines perform extremely well on the secondary market, achieving values at moderate price levels.
Moss Wood, Margaret River – over 20 cases available BUY NOW
Dr Bill Pannell established Moss Wood in 1969 at what is clearly one of the choicest and most beautiful vineyard sites in Australia. Keith and Clare Mugford who bought the property in 1985 have taken Moss Wood to the pinnacle of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination of site, vineyard management and soil conservation has been the key to ultimate fruit quality. Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is a highly important secondary market performer.
Mount Mary, Yarra Valley – over 50 cases available BUY NOW
Mount Mary is one of the great small wineries of Australia, established by Dr. John Middleton in 1972. Production is tiny. Mount Mary is noted for both its character and the high quality and individuality of its wines. Since the first (commercial) vintage in 1976, Mount Mary has established itself as one of Australia's most highly regarded producers. Middleton is fanatical using 42 vintages of experience, analysis and feel to achieve optimum fruit quality.

Penfolds is probably the most extraordinary of the world’s wine brands with an enviable reputation for quality at every price level. Penfolds traditional reds are mostly multi-regional blends. The result is a litany of consistently high-quality wine. Overall, the style is about highly-defined fruit aromas, fruit sweetness, ripe tannins, richness, power and concentration. Penfolds is the most reliable wine on the secondary market, although vintage specificity has become increasingly important.

Turkey Flat, named after the bush turkeys that used to roam freely, was established by fourth generation grape growers Peter and Christie Schulz at their property on the banks of Tanunda Creek. Turkey Flat Shiraz is becoming increasingly popular on the secondary market. In the context of Barossa Shiraz it offers strong regional provenance at a more affordable level.
Wendouree, Clare Valley – over 150 cases available BUY NOW
Wendouree is a great small Australian producer with an important cultural and historical identity. The Wendouree vineyards were first planted in 1893 on the easterly ridge towards the northern end of Clare. The Wendouree style is strongly focused with an emphasis on fruit power and weight. Wendouree is recognised as producing great wines and herein lays the dilemma – great wine attracts followers of many types and, by the laws of supply and demand, Brady’s wines should attract higher cellar-door values. However, he wishes to sell at what he believes are fair prices. Hence, the wines have achieved local cult status for both enthusiasts and investors.
Wolf Blass Wines, Barossa Valley – over 55 cases available BUY NOW
Wolf Blass Bilyara (meaning ‘Eaglehawk’) was established in 1973 by Wolf Blass, a German winemaker brought out by Kaiserstuhl to run its sparkling wine production. Wolf Blass was one of the early masters of wine marketing, his considerable winemaking, blending and wood-handling skills ensuring consistency and reliability across all quality levels. Wolf Blass is now a brand name within the global entity Beringer Blass, a multi-billion dollar subsidiary of Foster’s Brewing.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate, Coonawarra – over 20 cases available BUY NOW
Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the largest single vigneron in Coonawarra with almost 2200-acres of classic terra rossa. Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is referred to as Black Label. This wine, more than any other, has helped define Coonawarra. In a super vintage, this wine can look alarmingly like a second or third growth Bordeaux with its pure cassis aromas and cedary complexity. The wines are matured in a combination of new and old American and French oak for between 12 and 18 months depending on vintage. Wynns enjoys a moderate volume of interest, spiking on recognised vintage form.

Craiglee Shiraz is regarded as one of the top Shirazes in Victoria. They age well as they become more earthy and complex with softer tannins and length.

Dalwhinnie Shiraz is a brilliantly seductive wine and is one of the best in the country. The Eagle, only produced in exceptional vintages, shows plenty of secondary market promise. The Chardonnay is also worth a look.

Jasper Hill has been largely responsible for bringing fame to the Heathcote region. Its Shiraz-based wines are simply superb. Jasper Hill is a very strong market performer. The consistency of style across vintage illustrates the superiority of this vineyard site and attention to detail. These are extremely beautiful wines.

The Majella wines are all extremely well made, drawing excellent reviews. This is Robert Parker Jr.’s favourite Coonawarra winery. His rave reviews have given it an international market. Majella has started to make an impact on the secondary market – with a strong primary following this label has excellent potential.

These wines have made a remarkable dent in the secondary market, especially in good vintages. The Dorrien is one of the most undervalued of all Australian Cabernets. It has been a sleeper for many years but is beginning to emerge from its slumber.
TORBRECK wines available to BUY NOW
Torbreck is a revelation. The winemaking philosophy is suitably offbeat, with strong ideas about the effects of ultra-violet and polymerising of tannins, gravitational pull and the phases of the moon and their effects on fermentation speed and Baume levels. This is a marvellously eccentric little place doing its own thing – and it’s all paying off. From a secondary market perspective, Torbreck has gone from 0 to 600kmh in 60 seconds. Not bad for a knock-about bloke in search of his own nirvana.
YALUMBA wines available to BUY NOW
A lineage of three decades, proven cellaring potential, immense resources and a good winemaking team are all hallmarks of potential success. Yalumba Octavius is emerging as a very strong performer with quality rungs on the board. Yalumba’s investment in the sublime grape variety Viognier has resulted in the super-fine Virgilius. It challenges the notion that great wine has to be a cellaring proposition. Yalumba is an exciting producer with a clear eye on the cult and fine wine market.
