Alberto Aiello Graci has been making wine on Etna since 2004. He returned to the familial hearth following a career as an investment banker in Milan, selling his grandfather’s central Sicilian holdings to take on vines between 600 and 1,000 metres of altitude in the more serious terroir of Etna. Sited propitiously on the Etna caldera, at Arcuria, in the village of Passopisciaro, Graci tills ungrafted alberello (bush) vines that are 50 years on average, planted to a Burgundian density of 10,000 vines per hectare. He also owns an 80 year site in Contrada Feudo di Mezzo, Passopisciaro, and Contrada Barbabecchi, the latter so high that it is often harvested in November! After the most recent Etna eruption in December 2015, Alberto posited that “We are fatalists, we don’t care. It’s normal for us”.
