comte armand

Arguably the most famous producer in Pommard, the wines of Comte Armand have since the mid-eighties undergone a significant qualitative transformation, first under the leadership of French Canadian winemaker Pascal Marchand and currently under the helm of Benjamin Leroux. For many years the Clos des Epeneaux was the sole wine made at the domaine. In 1994, further vineyards were acquired; Auxey-Duresses, Auxey-Duresses premier cru, Volnay and Volnay Fremiets. Today the domaine maintains a strong adherence to biodynamic viticulture.

Together they own a 3.3ha plot in Heathcote (nicknamed Clos Graillot) an east-facing hillside site in the Mt Camel Ranges. The vineyard is an infertile rocky site typically yielding smaller bunches that ripen later. Graillot produce two wines, a savoury medium bodied Syrah and the No. 2 Syrah made in a plusher more approachable drink now style. Both wines come from their 3.3ha vineyard in Heathcote. All fruit is hand harvested and destemmed, with 25% whole berries included in the ferment. The wines sees no yeast additions, minimal sulphur employed, and is unfined and unfiltered.
