AN APPROACH TO RELAXATION Magnolia Grenache, Vine Vale 2019
Carla and Richard Betts describe themselves as two Americans, living in Amsterdam, making wine in Australia. Wine slingers by trade, hosts by habit, Carla is the former Wine Director at The Spotted Pig and the John Dory Oyster Bar in New York. Richard was the Wine Director at the 5-star resort The Little Nell in Aspen, Colorado and a former Master Sommelier (having publicly resigned from the Court of Master Sommeliers America in protest at the litany of problems with the organisation). Carla and Richard co-founded Betts & Scholl in Vine Vale in 2000 and they also make Komos Tequila and Sombra Mezcal. If you get an invitation to one of their parties, you should go.
An Approach To Relaxation’s Sucette Grenache is made from Betts & Scholl’s own dry-farmed Rza Block planted between 1860-1880. The Magnolia, a Langton’s exclusive, is made similarly but from their neighbour’s vineyard in Vale Vale.

Vine Vale is a little secret corner of the Barossa Valley. East of Chateau Tanunda, in the lee of Mengler Hill, the sandy soils are a haven for Grenache vines planted on this own roots 90 years ago in the Neldner Vineyard.

Blood orange zest on the nose carries through to the acidity. Plaited around this line of fresh consistency is a nose of peonies and palate with a negroni swatch of cherry and a bitter fruit sweetness through a medium body. There’s skittish energy that keeps this wine compelling, glass after glass.
