A Wine World Record was set on Sunday night, with a Langton's auction reaching $1.2 million dollars, highlighted by a full 64-vintage set and individual 'Baby Boomer' vintages of Australia's most famous wine, Penfolds Grange.

Langton’s recorded a sale of a full set of Penfolds Grange (1951 - 2014, 64 bottles) for $337,000. This vertical set the highest amount paid for any single lot at Langton’s auction in 2019, so far.

This is a stunning result for a full set of Grange. Each full set of Grange is unique. There are bottle variables–such as signatures or having been through the Recorking Clinic–and the provenance from each subsequent owner adding vintages, adds a chapter to the story of that particular set.

The 1956 Penfolds Bin 14 Grange Hermitage achieved a record price of $40,776. This vintage was last sold in 2016 for a mere $17,475–an increase of more than 60% on the price in three years.

Other Penfolds Grange vintages that sparked interest included a 1952 Bin 4 Grange Hermitage which sold for $38,585 (last sold 2018 for $36,116), a 1954 Bin 12 Grange Hermitage which sold for $23,000 (last sold in 2015 $14,913), a 1955 Bin 95 Grange Shiraz which sold for $13,980 (last sold May 2019 for $6,900) and a 1959 Bin 95 Grange Shiraz which sold for $6,990 (last sold May 2019 $3,961).

Penfolds, 1964 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon

Langton’s General Manager Jeremy Parham said of the result, “We’re used to seeing the words ‘Langton’s’, ‘Auction’, ‘Penfolds’ and ‘Record’ make the headlines. This set of auction results reinforces the enduring and growing appeal of Penfolds wines. A full set of Grange is always newsworthy, of course, but we’ve also seen the growth in demand for Bin 707, Bin 389 and St Henri. I expect more records to fall in the second half of 2019.”

A record highest price paid for a Penfolds Bin 707 has set a new standard in the market for this wine. 1964 Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon shone as one of the stars of the auction, selling for $13,980 ( last sold in 2015 for $5244). Other early vintages of Bin 707 show incredibly well including a 1965 Bin 707 which sold for $4,660, while a ‘66, a ‘67 and a ‘68 all achieved $2,330 per bottle.
