I am very pleased to finally be able to offer you the latest Burgundian Domaine that we’ve added to the Langton’s exclusive portfolio—Henri Magnien.
Charles Magnien and Jesper Kjaersgaard
On my last trip to Burgundy, there was one particular producer name that kept being mentioned by other Burgundians (always a good sign) as a “must visit”. The name of the Domaine in question was Henri Magnien, located in the village of Gevrey Chambertin with holdings in some of the most hallowed vineyards such as Estournelles Saint-Jacques, Lavaux St-Jacques, Cazetiers and the famed Grand Cru of Ruchottes Chambertin.
The estate is run by young Charles Magnien who took over from his father, fresh out of school, in 2009 and has since fine-tuned his understanding of the land and the vines. He is now producing some of the purest, finest and most enjoyable wines I have seen in a long time.
Charles is using up-to 35% whole bunch and some of the wines receive a fair amount of new oak but he skillfully masters the balancing act of making sure nothing masks the excellent pure fruit quality that this magical land has nurtured.
A Burgundian through and through, Charles is very clear that he wants the wines to speak of the land that they come from without too much human interaction. Charles is part of a new generation of growers in Côte de Nuits such as Cyrielle Rousseau of Armand Rousseau and Maxime Cheurlin of Georges Noellat. Together they are bringing freshness and energy to the Côte that is leading the way for a new generation of makers and drinkers alike.
Domaine Henri Magnien
The wines of Domaine Henri Magnien are brightly fruited and bursting with energy, slaloming through a spectrum of raspberries, red cherries and blood orange with just enough spice and complexity from the winemaking and oak treatment. The palate is fleshy, vibrant—Charles’ wines ooze joyful confidence.
The future is very bright for this young star. I’ll be following him closely and I can’t wait to see what he and his vineyards produce over the coming years. Do yourself a favour and try these wines before they get too hard to find.
