We’re heading into a big Easter wine auction weekend.
YOUR HAPPY HOLIDAY WINE AUCTION WEEKEND
Langton’s has four sales, all closing at 9pm on Easter Sunday.
Penfolds: Rewards of Patience has just eight items on offer -- but what items!
Penfolds, 1962 Bin 60A. Signed by Max Schubert.
They include 1962 Bin 60A , the legendary Max Schubert’s classic 60:40 blend of Coonawarra Cabernet and Barossa Shiraz that many regard as the greatest Australian wine in living memory. It’s expected to fetch between $7000 and $9500.
And there’s 1951 Grange (Hermitage) , the first, experimental vintage that holds the auction price record as Australia’s most expensive single bottle -- $59,416.
But the cherry on top is a complete, 63-vintage set of Grange (1951-2013) .
Will it equal, or break, the current auction price record of $332,608?
In order of size, next comes our Impeccable Single Vendor sale, with 69 perfectly stored wines being let go by a collector who has his own Penfolds connection...
‘My overwhelming passion for wine started the moment I tasted the 1990 Penfolds Bin 389 ’, he told us.
‘I arranged to have built a private, walk-in cellar, humidity and temperature controlled, with a capacity of 4000 bottles.’
Our vendor’s wine travels have included a week at the Anne Gros vineyard in Burgundy, just 200 metres from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti -- ‘what a temptation it was to reach over the stone fence and touch the precious grapes!’
At Bouchard Pere et Fils in Beaune… ‘I was fortunate enough to visit the cave storing dusty 300-400 year old bottles, including Romanée Conti.’
He says: ‘Nowadays I enjoy a nice 2005 red Burgundy with family and friends. I am also pleased to say that most of my 2005 Bordeaux wines were purchased through Langton’s (en primeur), with the kind assistance of (Langton’s co-founder) Andrew Caillard MW.’
