‘On form, Philip is Australian wine’s Kerouac, Hemingway and Montaigne rolled into one.’ Max Allen, The Australian
Wine writer Philip White - ‘Whitey’ to most who know him - is battling cancer.
His friends and colleagues throughout the wine world, led by Yangarra’s Peter Fraser, have donated generously in kind, and Langton’s held a successful fundraising auction. The total proceeds will go to help pay White’s medical and other expenses.
The auction was held on Tuesday, February 5 with no reserve prices on the donated wines with the total amount going to Philip White's fund. The auction was a success, drawing some o the big numbers we've seen and raised thousands of dollars for Whitey.
Four big-bottle highlights were double-magnums of Cardinale Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (Napa Valley), Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No 2 Shiraz 2014, d’Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz 2008 and Hickinbotham The Peake Cabernet Shiraz 2012.
Magnums included Castagna Genesis Syrah, Fox Creek Reserve, Glaetzer John’s Blend, Yangarra High Sands Grenache, Oliver’s Taranga HJ Reserve, Penfolds Bin 707, Rockford Basket Press, S.C. Pannell Grenache, Shaw & Smith Shiraz and M3 Chardonnay, Wirra Wirra RSW and Yalumba The Signature.
Another highly desirable item was Collector’s Edition copy number 8 of A Year in the Life of Grange, the award-winning book by photographer Milton Wordley (with text by White) plus a bottle of 2008 Grange donated by Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago.
White has been writing about wine for 35 years, in recent years via his Drinkster blog and Adelaide’s InDaily, in the past for most of Australia’s major newspapers and many of the world’s lifestyle and gastronomy magazines.
Philip White is first and foremost a writer. Read more about Philip White from Milton Wordley.
