Spotlight on Telmo Rodriguez
Friday, May 30, 2014 in News
Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s most famous winemakers. A key figure in the new wave of Spanish wine, he is credited for rediscovering great old vineyards, advocating the use of local varieties and producing world-class wines from both established and emerging regions.
A native of Rioja, Telmo studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux and worked as the winemaker at Remelluri, his family’s winery in Rioja. In the early 1990’s he set off to find new undiscovered vineyards around Spain.
Compania Vinos de Telmo Rodriguez was founded in 1992 with his friend, fellow winemaker and business partner Pablo Eguzkiza. Starting with a modest parcel of Garnacha from Navarra, they quickly began finding special vineyard parcels around Spain where they could begin producing exciting new interpretations of Spanish wine.
What has made Telmo Rodriguez unique from the outset is his commitment to sustainable organic viticulture. The entire viticultural philosophy is centred on allowing the fruit to speak. Biodynamic practices, old bush vines and low cropping levels, all contribute to healthy vibrant fruit that speaks strongly of place.
Today Telmo Rodriguez produces an impressive range of world-class wines from across Spain, many from ‘rediscovered’ varieties such as Godello, Verdejo, Moscatel and Monastrell. Although he makes several rare and limited wines of outstanding character and quality, his everyday wines are also widely recognized for offering fantastic value.
