Week in Review 24-03-18

What’s better than getting your hands on a museum wine? Getting your hands on a Classified museum wine. This week our customers pounced on a museum six-pack of Classified wines (Exceptional, Outstanding and Excellent). Given the response (it sold out), we dipped into the cellar and selected something very special… The 2005 Anamorphosis is one of those R Wines collectibles famous for innovative (sometimes controversial) packaging and big, bold, above-and-beyond power, body and fruit. This wine comes in a presentation case with an anamorphic poster evoking da Vinci in the vines.

Back in the present, on the tasting table this week we’ve looked at quite a few interesting wines. The Oakridge LVS Willowlake 2016 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were on pour and Dave Bicknell hasn’t disappointed with either of these elegant Yarra Valley wines. And for a very enjoyable comparison we lined up the Chatto Mania Chardonnay 2016 (Tamar Valley).

There also a last call for Options Club tickets. Our monthly meet-up where we taste wines and test knowledge playing the Options Game created by the late great Len Evans, hosted by our own Adrian Read.

R. Wines Anamorphosis Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2005

Chris Ringland’s project, R Wines produced some inspirational wine but none as face bendingly inspirational as the Anamorphosis. The Renaissance artists’ trick, Anamorphosis hides a secret in plane sight. This 96 - 99 point robertparker.com review describes what’s hidden within: ‘Voluptuous, thick rich, and full-bodied, it is a powerful yet seamless expression of Shiraz from a great terroir. It will age effortlessly for 20 years but can be enjoyed young because of its mammoth fruit. It is a winemaking tour de force.’

Pikes Traditionale Riesling 2017

Pikes Traditionale Riesling 2017

At the winery, they call it ‘The Trad.’ Our Langton’s brokerage clients do the same and when they speak to their brokers the call usually goes like this: “I’ll take a case of The Trad.” After 33 vintages, ‘The Trad’ is both a pillar and yardstick for Clare Valley Riesling, situated in the Polish Hill River, near Grosset and Paulett.

After so many vintages, ‘The Trad’ is the classic Riesling to always have on hand.

McLaren Vale Value Shiraz Dozen

McLaren Vale Value Shiraz Dozen

Not for nothing is McLaren Vale known as ‘Australia’s middle palate’. Veteran wine writer Chris Shanahan (goodfood.com) explains why…

‘Time and again at tastings, bottles of McLaren Vale Shiraz empty well ahead of their more delicate, cool-climate peers. People praise the latter, but drain the former. Why? It seems nothing pleases the senses more than a deep, dark red, rippling with earthy, ripe fruit flavours, backed by savour and tannin.’

What’s in the case?
Pertaringa ‘Undercover’ 2015
d’Arenberg ‘The Footbolt’ 2014
Kilikanoon ‘Parable’ 2015
Two Hands ‘Angels’ Share’ 2017
