About this wine
Domaine Dujac Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru
The Bonnes Mares Grand Cru lies between the village of Morey-Saint-Denis to the north and Chambolle-Musigny to the south, halfway up the hillside where the slope is very steep (11%). The plot ranges in altitude from 278 to 296m. The lieu-dit faces east.
The soil changes from east to west. The reddish-brown soil in the eastern part is 40 to 50 cm thick, with frequent blunt crinoidal limestone fragments (calcaire à Entroques). To the west, the light-coloured soil is about as thick, but less stony, with some small oyster shells.
Two different types of substratum underlie Les Bonnes Mares. In the eastern part, ocher limestone rich in debris from marine organisms (calcaire à Entroques) crops out in places, because there was once a quarry in this Grand Cru. In the upper quarter of the plot, to the west, this limestone is overlain by marls rich in small oyster shells (marnes à Ostrea Acuminata).
'The quality of a wine is determined primarily in the vineyard. As the owners of exceptional terroirs, it is our responsibility to ensure they reach their full potential, through thoughtful management and constant care.'

This vintage has a pretty good balance to it,' Jeremy Seysses says as he pours a sample. Not made in 2016 because of the frost, the key to the success of this wine is that yields were reasonable rather than excessive. Showing subtle reduction in barrel, 85% whole-bunch fermentation and 33% new wood contribute to a juicy, sappy, well-defined Chambolle with good texture and notes of white pepper and raspberry coulis.

Dense imperial purple, with a nose that takes coaxing but is remarkably complex. Some quality oak behind this summer pudding of a wine. It is going to be a Rubens beauty in due course. Bonnes Mares seems to fall into two camps: those that got hit by the heat and drought and those that blossomed. This is in the latter category. Tasted Nov 2019.

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is blessed with one of my favorite aromatics from Dujac this year, featuring black cherries, raspberry, crushed stone and pressed iris flower, all quite restrained for a Bonnes-Mares but showing outstanding focus. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, a fine line of acidity and a strict and quite linear finish that lingers long in the mouth. Outstanding.
