About this wine
La Dame de Montrose, 2nd wine of Château Montrose, Saint-Estèphe
La Dame de Montrose, first vintage 1983, is the highly-regarded ‘second wine’ of Chateau Montrose, the St. Estephe deuxième cru (second growth). Montrose has a little more than 90ha of vines, the entire site overlooking the Gironde. The vineyard is 60% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Around 50% (or less) of the crop goes to make the ‘grand vin’ and around 30% (or more) goes into La Dame de Montrose. (The rest is used elsewhere or sold in bulk.) In good years La Dame de Montrose is considered a bargain, in the best years it stands alone as a great wine. The Dame de Montrose herself is the late Yvonne Charmolüe, who ran the estate from 1944 to 1960.

Decanter
Generous nose filled with sweet blackcurrant fruit. This is dense and impactful, chewy with fine but grippy tannins making their presence known straight away. I love the texture though, it's mouth coating in the best way - refined, with bright berry fruit and liquorice edges, particularly on the finish. Everything feels in balance with plenty going on and lots to like. A blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot (which is unusual because normally there is a majority of Merlot) with 3% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

Juicy and pleasantly chewy with milk chocolate, walnut and currant aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, creamy and flavorful. Second wine of Montrose. Drink after 2024.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW
Made from 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2019 La Dame de Montrose is deep garnet-purple colored. It comes galloping out with powerful notes of kirsch, blackberry pie, and warm cassis, plus suggestions of rose oil, dark chocolate, and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is packed with juicy black and red berries, framed by soft, rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with a skip in its step.
93+ points, The Wine Independant (May 2022)
