SALLY'S PADDOCK Redbank Winery Cabernet Shiraz Cabernet Franc Merlot, Pyrenees 1981

Sally's Paddock is typified by blackcurrant pastille/ cedar wood aromas, with underlying savoury oak and fine grippy tannins. Each element of the blend is woven together without any variety dominating the wine. The four-hectare dry-grown Sally's Paddock Vineyard, on alluvial gravels over rich friable red clay soils, was planted by Neil and Sally Robb in 1973. Viticulture relies on natural rainfall, "a beneficial climate" and cultivation. The low yielding vines are unirrigated and the fruit is handpicked. The wine is made with a laissez-faire approach. After batch vinification the wine is drained and gently pressed off in small basket presses. Maturation takes place in 60 to 70% new and seasoned French oak and American oak puncheons.

Region Pyrenees

The Pyrenees is located in western Central Victoria and was settled during the gold rush of the 1850s. The region is located northeast of the Grampians, north of the Great Dividing Range. Many of the vineyards are planted with an easterly aspect at an altitude of around 350 to 400m on quartz and decomposed slatey soils over Friable clay. Low rainfall in the area necessitates drip irrigation. Temperatures during the growing season are moderated by late afternoon southerly breezes. The Pyrenees is best known for producing cool climate peppery Shiraz and well-structured Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winery SALLY'S PADDOCK

Sally’s Paddock is a small boutique producer in Victoria’s Pyrenees region. The four hectare unirrigated Sally’s Paddock vineyard, planted by Neill Robb and his wife Sally in 1973, was originally planted with Shiraz. Over subsequent years the “misses” were re-planted with Bordeaux varieties. The vines are established on alluvial gravels over rich friable red clay soils at an altitude of 420 metres. Neill continues to make Sally’s Paddock at Redbank Winery.
