Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG
First released in 1983, the Rancia (the wine is named for the vineyard from which the fruit is sourced) is named for a former Benedictine monastery, now known as the Rancia farmhouse.
The southwest-facing vineyard is located in Castelnuovo Berardenga at elevations ranging between 400 and 420 metres it has a fine exposure. Newly planted vines are cuttings from the selezione massale or ‘massal selection’ vines in the old Rancia vineyard.
Composed of 100% Sangiovese, the fruit is hand harvested before the selected bunches are are destemmed and pressed. The must is fermented in stainless steel for two-to-three weeks before going into new French oak barrels for 18-20 months of maturation prior to the final assemblage.
The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a tremendous wine with an impactful yet very elegant bouquet. The central theme here is darkness and richness, and you get both of those things to the extent that Sangiovese can offer. The magic here is that Sangiovese sticks stubbornly to its inner grace and elegance, especially in a classic vintage such as this. Gravel alberese soils add to the wine's overall sharpness and detailed focus. There is a touch of sweet cherry confit ripeness on the close.

Plenty of dark plums, black cherries, blackberry pie, cedar, tobacco and a hint of orange rind. There’s a real vitality to the palate, which is so well carved out by firm, savoury tannins and seriously bright acidity. A chewy finish. Drink in 2022.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is one of the most finessed young Rancias I have ever tasted. Silky, aromatically precise and nuanced to the core, the 2015 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. This is an impressive showing.

The fine cherry, plum, leather and spice flavours pick up accents of chocolate, earth and mineral as this red gathers steam. Builds to a firmly structured finish, where sweet fruit and dusty tannins linger. Drink now through 2028.

Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Supple, minerally cherry fruit that gains in depth on the palate. Tangy, ripe fruit with mouth-filling, ripe tannins and hints of tar on the finish.
