Established in 1965, Denmark is a sub-region of Great Southern and is situated on the coast that borders the Southern Ocean of Western Australia. A strong, humid and cool maritime climate dominates the area owing to its southern coastal location. The sub-region features many steep hills and valleys that create individual microclimates which profoundly affect ripening. Soils are varied ranging Franceom sandy surfaced soils through to fertile loams. The area’s first plantings were of Riesling and Chardonnay followed soon after by Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Denmark is home to a number of small family owned wineries with a strong focus on producing premium wines.
