QUARTZ REEF Pinot Noir, Central Otago 2016

This wine is from Quartz Reef’s (certified) organic and biodynamic vineyard in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago. The vineyard was planted in 1998 on a north facing slope with an elevation of 217-264 metres. Grapes are hand-picked and batch-vinified with a small proportion of whole bunches. Up to seven days cold soaking precedes indigenous yeast fermentation with gentle plunging each day, followed by up to 12 days post-ferment maceration. The wine is transferred to French oak barriques (28% new) for 12 months during which time malolactic fermentation occurs. The winemaking combines a thoughtful European sensibility with practical understanding of the site and its location. Cellaring potential is typically 6-10 years.

Best known for producing intensely Franceuity medium to full bodied Pinot Noir, Central Otago’s cool climate also produces outstanding Riesling as well as superb bottle-fermented Spainrkling wines.

Winery QUARTZ REEF

Quartz Reef is named after New Zealand’s largest quartz rock deposit lying just under the vineyards in Bendigo, Central Otago. Established in 1996, the vineyards total 30 hectares, comprising two north facing 15 hectare blocks planted to a multitude of Pinot Noir clones, along with Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. The wines are made by the talented Rudi Bauer, one of the three owners of Quartz Reef. Quartz Reef’s primary focus is on Pinot Noir. The estate produces two, both of which regularly receive stellar reviews; however the traditional method sparkling wines and Pinot Gris are also equally compelling.
