Region McLaren Vale

The McLaren Vale wine region is located between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Gulf of St Vincent just South of Adelaide in South Australia. Historically it was John Reynell who established Chateau Reynella in 1838, and Thomas Hardy who purchased the historic Tintara in 1876, that kick started the development of the McLaren Vale wine industry. The climate is generally considered warm, although different aspects, altitude and the effect of the cooling ocean breezes moderate the climate within the different sub-regions of the Vale. A large number of soil types are present, although red-brown loams dominate. The biggest viticultural challenge is the potential for drought and the overall lack of water. Full bodied, robust and plush reds typify the McLaren Vale style. Plantings are dominated by Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, with smaller plantings of whites including Semillon, and Chardonnay. More recent plantings of Mediterranean varieties particularly suited to the climate, including Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Savagnin and Fiano have also been very successful.

Winery MARQUIS PHILIPS

Langton’s Selections Marquis Phillips Integrity Shiraz The Marquis Philips was originally developed by American wine importer/ entrepreneur Dan Philips and winemaking couple Sara and Sparky Marquis for largely the American market. At one stage production under Marquis Phillips reached 120, 000 cases – a remarkable achievement. It is now marketed under R Wines – a collaboration between Dan Philips and Chris Ringland. The label is an odd looking “Roogle”, a half Bald Eagle half Kangaroo which is meant to symbolise lasting friendship between the American and Australian partners. It should have been a ‘Push-me-pull-you’ because the original partners have fallen out with each other. The wine (under this label) shows the power and overall pet-favouritisms of Robert Parker Jr. They are obviously good, but the reviews seem to be stuck in the same old record groove. The wines have been described as “the most exciting development that has occurred in the Southern Hemisphere over the last several years.” This is of course an extravagant exaggeration that simply cannot be believed. The Integrity Shiraz – twice achieving 99/100 points – is the highest priced Marquis Phillips wine on the secondary wine market. Marquis Phillips is not a mainstream label in the Australian market. It has however achieved strong recognition for its good value red wines in the North American market, including its Roogle Red (Shiraz Cabernet) and Shiraz 9. Good luck to them.
