ALVARO PALACIOS L'Ermita Gran Vino Guarda Velles Vinyes 2006

L’Ermita is Alvaro Palacios’ flagship wine, sourced from a steep 2 hectare, northeast facing vineyard planted on well-drained schist soils. The vines are between 70-100 years of age. Made solely from Garnacha, the wine is a study in intensity and approachability. A wine of great concentration with an usual open-knit structure that contradicts it’s ‘hermit’ name, L’Ermita is matured for 20 months in 100% new French oak barriques.

Region Priorat

Priorat

This tiny region on the Catalonian coastal hinterland produces some of Spain’s most prestigious red wines. The region has only 1,800 ha of vines covering steep terraces and plateaus up to 900m featuring both granite based soils and unique shale based ”llicorella” soils. Priorat experiences warm to hot days with cool evenings producing wines of great intensity, colour and ripeness. Over the past 20 years, Priorat’s vineyards planted to Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, have been slowly revived with great success, producing a new wave of powerful, rich reds, some with generous new oak characters.

Winery ALVARO PALACIOS

Alvaro Palacios is one of Spain’s most significant and influential producers, credited for being one of the pioneers that assisted in the resurrection of Priorat as a wine region. Alvaro came from a winemaking family in Rioja but completed his oenology studies in Bordeaux while working under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Chateau Pétrus. In 1989, he made the decision to set up in Priorat. Almost from the start, his wines were met with great international acclaim, helping to raise global awareness of Priorat as a region. In 1998, intrigued by the potential of the Bierzo region, Alvaro and his nephew Picardo Perez formed a joint venture called Descendientes de J Palacios making superb Mencia based wines from a variety of terroirs.
