DOMAINE DE LA VOUGERAIE Les Mazoyeres, Charmes-Chambertin 2015

This Grand Cru wine is sourced from a 0.735 ha parcel of the “Les Mazoyeres” plot within the famous Charmes-Chambertin vineyard. The east facing parcel of old vines was planted in 1901 and 1902 and is situated mid slope. The top of the site has deep soils composed of silt and clay with some calcareous rock on the lower slope. The vineyard has been accredited biodynamic since 2001. Once the grapes are hand harvested most fruit is destalked and not crushed. The amount of whole bunch fermentation varies with vintage. A four-day cold pre-fermentation maceration is used before fermentation begins naturally with indigenous yeasts. Following pressing the wine is matured in 60% new oak from the forests of Allier, Nevers and Tronçais for 12-18 months depending on the vintage

Vivid coloration ranging from deep ruby to black-cherry. Their aromas suggest strawberry, blackcurrant, and gooseberry as well as fruit pits, liquorice, and spices. Violet, moss and underbrush are also likely to be present. On the palate, power, opulence and elegance unite to make a full and complex body, full of sap and voluptuosness textured. Keeping potential is 10 years minimum. Although these sumptuous Grands Crus share a family resemblance, each has its own distinctive nuances.

Winery DOMAINE DE LA VOUGERAIE

Domaine de la Vougeraie, based in Premeaux just south of Nuits St Georges, was created in 1999 when Jean-Claude Boisset of the Boisset Group pulled together all of the various vineyard holdings which he had purchased over the years for his negociant business. The idea from the beginning was to create a no expenses spared domaine and Pascal Marchand - a native of Montreal who was the winemaker at Comte Armand at the time -  was employed to not only make the wines but to oversee the conversion of Vougeraie's then 36ha to organic and then to biodynamic cultivation.   Marchand left in 2005 and Pierre Vincent's approach was to make less extracted and less oaky wines than his predecessor. While Vincent left in 2016 to join Domaine Leflaive, the winemaking team of François Lécaillon and general director Sylvie Poillot, have continued Vincent's gentler handling of the fruit while at the same time reducing the use of oak even more with only 25% new wood for the Gran
