KILIKANOON Attunga 1865 2009

Attunga means “high place” in Australian indigenous language and the wine is produced from some of the oldest living vines in the world. The Attunga vineyard still contains 900 surviving vines from the early 1860’s.  This parcel of Shiraz anchored on terra rossa soils of red brown loam layered over limestone, produces fruit of great richness and concentration. The low yielding fruit is harvested, fermented then basket pressed, spending 27 months in new French oak hogsheads before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Region Clare Valley

The Clare Valley

The Clare Valley is located two hours north of Adelaide in the Mount Lofty ranges. The region was settled by John Horrocks who encouraged his servant James Green to plant the first vines in 1842. Climate in the Clare Valley is continental with hot summers, cold winters and low rainfall that necessitates supplementary irrigation. Soils in the valley are predominantly red brown loams over shale, permitting excellent drainage. Many of the best vineyards are located at higher elevations of 400-500m on sites that take advantage of the cool breezes that funnel up the corrugation of hills from the south. The Clare Valley is renowned for its zesty fruit-pure Rieslings particularly from the sub-regions of Polish Hill and Watervale. The region also produces intense age-worthy sturdy reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Winery KILIKANOON

Kilikanoon Winery, based at Penwortham, was established in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, an Adelaide University graduate and a Clare Valley winemaker down to his bootstraps. Initially the wines were based on Kilikanoon’s Golden Hillside suite of contiguous vineyards planted by Kevin’s father Mort during the 1960s and 1970s. Low input viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques are extensively employed evoking the idea of hand-made wines. Fastidious attention to detail and a burning ambition to make wines with clear regional definition and individual personality has quickly established Kilikanoon as one of Clare’s top producers.
