Region McLaren Vale

The McLaren Vale wine region is located between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Gulf of St Vincent just South of Adelaide in South Australia. Historically it was John Reynell who established Chateau Reynella in 1838, and Thomas Hardy who purchased the historic Tintara in 1876, that kick started the development of the McLaren Vale wine industry. The climate is generally considered warm, although different aspects, altitude and the effect of the cooling ocean breezes moderate the climate within the different sub-regions of the Vale. A large number of soil types are present, although red-brown loams dominate. The biggest viticultural challenge is the potential for drought and the overall lack of water. Full bodied, robust and plush reds typify the McLaren Vale style. Plantings are dominated by Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, with smaller plantings of whites including Semillon, and Chardonnay. More recent plantings of Mediterranean varieties particularly suited to the climate, including Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Savagnin and Fiano have also been very successful.

Langton’s Selections Primo Estate Joseph Moda Amarone Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot There is something utterly compelling and decent about Joseph, the ultra-premium label of Primo Estate Winery, still located in Virginia, Adelaide Plains. However the cellar door and administration have moved to McLaren Vale where the winery has proprietary vineyards. The original vineyards located in the Adelaide Plains were planted by Primo Grilli, an immigrant Italian and market gardener with a remarkable dream to make wine. After 20 years building up a modest market garden, he hocked everything to build a winery for his sons Peter and Joe, each barely into trousers. Joe Grilli duly went off to nearby Roseworthy Agricultural College (where he achieved Dux) to study winemaking, spending his spare time in the winery mucking around with radical new ideas and making a stock in trade fruity Colombard and other simple, easy drinking wines. Those explorations of ideas – including including double-pruning, air drying of fruit and inoculation of botrytis spores – formed the basis of their winemaking philosophy. Exploring the unconventional and making revolutionary dazzling wines were modus operandi from the very start. The boyish charm and energy has continued. With a strong sense of Italian provenance, Joe Grilli and his wife Dina spent some time in Umbria learning the more laissez faire unhurried approach to winemaking. They both speak about the need and importance of serenity in the winery. Primo Estate’s wines reflect Australian practicality and Italian heritage. The wines are often trial-blended on the kitchen bench away from the madding crowd and slurped up with food. At the basic level, the wines are fun and honour the winery origins. La Biondina (The Young Blonde) is still an Adelaide Plains Colombard which offers freshness and vitality. Merlesco is a juicy unoaked Merlot and Il Briccone (The Rogue) a clever synthesis of ripe Shiraz and savoury Sangiovese. For collectors and admirers of instrinsically finer wines, it is the Joseph Label that provides the most interest. Indeed Joseph Moda Amarone Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is something of a modern classic. This wine style harks back to the Amarone method of production that originates from Valpolicella in Northern Italy. In previous vintages fruit has been sourced from various vineyards in South Australia including Mclaren Vale and Coonawarra. The wine is nowadays an 85% McLaren Vale (McMurtrie Road) Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Clarendon Merlot grown at Primo Estate’s Angel Gully vineyard. After picking, the fruit is allowed to dry out on racks to increase the skin to juice ratio. The wine is made in a traditional way using open fermenters followed by maturation in a combination of French, German and American oak for between 14 and 20 months depending on the vintage. The Joseph Moda Amarone shows gamey, chocolatey fruit aromas with well-integrated oak and well-defined, grainy tannins. The overall style transcends the vagaries of vintage making it a very reliable wine. It’s not overtly varietal; rather a house style with excellent ageing potential. This is a wine that offers richness, power, perfume and structure together with the long plush sweet fruit notes of Merlot. Its current track record, if retrospective tastings are anything to go by, suggests that it is one of Australia’s top 10 Cabernet Sauvignons. Other wines in the Joseph range include a really interesting Joseph Sparkling Red made from aged vintages of Australian wines (purchased on the market), aged bottles of Primo Estate Adelaide Plains Cabernet and a soupcon of Joseph Moda. The wine is blended as a base and then refermented in bottle, disgorged and liqueured with old vintage port material. The wine is inevitably very complex. However it rarely reaches the secondary wine market. Joseph Pinot Grigio d’Elena, Joseph Angel Gully Shiraz and Joseph La Magia Botrytis Riesling complete the portfolio. Joseph Fronti is a more specialist type fortified wine which occasionally finds its way into the market. Primo Estate also makes a range of olive oils under the Joseph Label.
