Dark colour. Dark chocolate, blackberry aromas with graphite notes. Quite solid with rich saturated dark cherry, blackberry, praline flavours, rich chocolates tannins and grilled almond nuts. Fine chalky finish. Inky finish. Linear acidity. Tasted at Ch Haut Brion.
"The 2016 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is an absolutely gorgeous, vivid wine endowed with tremendous aromatic intensity and stunning beauty. Gravel, tobacco, smoke and dark fruit all open up in the glass, but it is the wine's total sense of allure that is most captivating. The Clarence seems to have firmed up a bit following its bottling in June, but that is not at all a bad thing. Today, it is memorable. There is not much more I can add. 2020-2028"

"The wild-blackberry and smoky nose draws you into this excellent Pessac-Léognan that marries concentration and freshness beautifully, feeling deceptively light on the palate, thanks to its lively acidity. Long, cool and minerally finish. The second wine of Haut-Brion and a blend of 51.3 per cent merlot, 33 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 13.1 per cent cabernet franc, and 2.6 per cent petit verdot. "The 2016 Le Clarence de Haut Brion is a tad more open on the nose compared to the La Chapelle de la Mission, offering red cherries, wild strawberry and just a touch of bergamot tea. The palate is well balanced, with fine-grained tannin framing the black fruit, exhibiting more grip than its La Mission counterpart and more complexity on the lightly spiced, persistent finish. Excellent. 2022-2038"

Dark crimson. Intense nose that's very Haut-Brion. Fine, restrained and just a bit low key. But very classy fruit and oak. Would give a lot of pleasure quite young.
Though wine has been made in Pessac-Léognan since ancient Roman times, it was only in 1987 that the neighbouring villages of Pessac and Léognan were singled out from the surrounding Graves region and given their own appellation. The designation acknowledges that Pessac-Léognan is home to the most acclaimed properties of Bordeaux’s Graves region, such as the Premier Cru Château Haut-Brion.
The vineyards of Pessac-Léognan, just south of the city of Bordeaux, are crowded by suburban sprawl. About 3,000 acres are dedicated mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown for red wines, with a small portion devoted to Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and other grapes for white wines. Pessac-Léognan red wines are elegant and concentrated, with medium to full body. They offer distinct aromas and flavours of mineral and earth, and can have lush fruit or smoky tobacco character. Pessac-Léognan white wines are dry, unlike the famous sweet white wines from nearby Sauternes. They are generally crisp and minerally with citrus notes, often with rich character from oak aging and capable of improving with additional age.
