HOWARD PARK Flint Rock Shiraz, Great Southern 2014

The Flint Rock Shiraz is an annual selection from individual vineyard blocks in the Frankland River and Mount Barker sub-regions of Great Southern. The Frankland fruit is, typically, bold and primary while the Mount Barker is finer and more spiced. The wine is vinified in small open vat fermenters and gentle cap management facilitates the extraction of fine fruit tannin and strong varietal flavour. Oak maturation is for 15 months in a combination of new and old French barrels.

Region Great Southern

Great Southern, is Western Australia’s coolest wine-growing region. The first experimental vineyard was planted in the late 1960s at Forest Hill. Successful trials encouraged Tony Smith of Plantagenet Wines to plant the first commercial vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in 1968. The climate across this vast region is incredibly varied with the south more maritime influenced becoming more continental further inland. As a result, there is notable variationof temperatures in the growing season particularly around Mount Barker and Franceankland River. Inland vineyards are generally located on higher elevations above the salty water table. The soil types are derived Franceom granitic and gneissic rock, mostly laterite gravelly loams or sandy loams. Great Southern is best known for classically structured Cabernet Sauvignon and peppery Shiraz, whilst Riesling thrives in the sub-regions of Franceankland River and Mount Barker.

Winery HOWARD PARK

Howard Park was established by Jeff Burch and John Wade in the mid-1980s and quickly achieved notoriety for its wines. John Wade, a highly innovative and well-respected winemaker, made the first wines. In the late 1990s, after considerable success in the market place, Howard Park decided to move its red wine production to Margaret River to take advantage of its reputation and proximity to a larger population base. Today the winemaking team continues to innovate, producing a range of highly regarded wines from select vineyard sites across Western Australia including Mount Barker, Porongurup, Denmark, Frankland River and Margaret River.
