Amisfield RKV Reserve Pinot Noir, Central Otago 2015
Amisfield RKV Reserve Pinot Noir is a classic, well structured Otago Pinot noir. The RKV (Rocky Knoll Vineyard) Reserve represents the best of Amisfield's single-vineyard estate Pinot. The dark wine shows a cherry fruit profile with expressive mocha, spicy oak and aromatic complexity.
Amisfield is one of the must-visit cellar doors and their Pinot is one of Otago’s must-haves wines.
Produced from low cropping vines on a rocky section of Amisfield's Block 1 vineyard in the Pisa subregion. A generously proportioned pinot noir with intense plum, dark cherry, berry and subtle floral and violet flavours. Seductively drinkable now but with obvious cellaring potential.

In the process of conversion to organics. Barrel sample. As an experiment and in an attempt to express the vineyard site as clearly as possible, this wine was fermented with ambient yeasts in the vineyard - hot days and cold nights - in a 600-litre cask and 30% whole bunches. Starting with fruit picked cool in the morning, fermentation started on day 6 and went up to 30 ºC, with a total of 20 days on skins. It was brought back to the cellar for pressing.
Delicate, peppery and elegant, fine-boned and juicy - overall a fine harmony and elegance - and what seems to have been a successful experiment.

The 2014 RKV Reserve Pinot Noir has a wonderful bouquet with black cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry scents, becoming ever more floral as it opens in the glass and picks up notes of rose petal and iris. The palate is well balanced, offering supple tannin, smooth texture and red fruit infused with Chinese 5-spice. There are noticeable wood tannins to be absorbed towards the finish, but there is impressive depth here, and it lingers nicely in the mouth. Excellent.

Central Otago, located at the southern end of the South Island of New Zealand, is the world’s most southerly wine region. In a short amount of time, the area has established itself as a world-class region for Pinot Noir. The picturesque region is surrounded by mountains ensuring a cool semi-continental climate that experiences a large diurnal range contributing to the creation of intensely concentrated wines with perfume, and complexity. Central Otago’s vineyard area is divided into six distinct sub regions each with their own climate and wine style. Best known for producing intensely Fruity medium to full bodied Pinot Noir, Central Otago’s cool climate also produces outstanding Riesling as well as superb bottle-fermented Sparkling wines.
