Gratallops is known for being the first village of Priorat to be awarded recognition as an appellation, and winemaker Álvaro Palacios was one of the pioneers who set those wheels in motion in the late 1980s. Full-bodied, this wine dances deftly on the palate with waves of European strawberries, a touch of spice, and earthy minerality.
Rich nose of pure strawberries and red plums with hints of slate and pepper. Full body, round tannins and a pure-strawberry character that comes through on the finish. Fruity and reserved. 85% garnacha and 15% cariñena.

The red 2014 Gratallops is a "vi de vila" (a village wine), which is a category created in Priorat. Priorat has been a pioneer within the appellations of origin to start differentiating and defining origin in their wines. This is a blend of approximately 80% Garnacha and the rest Cariñena. All the plots used are mentioned on the label: Ermites, La Capella, Torrent, Coll del Corral, Socarrats, L’Hort de L’Olivar, La Font Nova, Carrerada, Coll de Falset, Obagues and Manyetes. It fermented in oak vat followed by malolactic and aging in barrique. This felt quite floral and open, aromatic and elegant, mixing flowers and Mediterranean herbs, and an earthy but subtle mineral sensation. The herbal sensation seems to grow with time in the glass. The palate is tasty, I guess the high acidity makes the wine long and amplifies the mineral/salty sensation in the finish. Agile and vertical, the abundant tannins seem sharpened by the acidity and it should benefit from some more time in bottle.

PrioratThis tiny region on the Catalonian coastal hinterland produces some of Spain’s most prestigious red wines. The region has only 1,800 ha of vines covering steep terraces and plateaus up to 900m featuring both granite based soils and unique shale based ”llicorella” soils. Priorat experiences warm to hot days with cool evenings producing wines of great intensity, colour and ripeness. Over the past 20 years, Priorat’s vineyards planted to Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, have been slowly revived with great success, producing a new wave of powerful, rich reds, some with generous new oak characters.
