Giussepe Russo, winemaker since 2005, has a hands-off approach (organic yeasts, no fining/filtering etc.) with his organically tended fruit. This Nerello Mascalese is grown on sandy, lava based soils at 650–780m on the unthreatened northern slope of Europe's highest and most active volcano. Matured in second and third use French oak barriques for 14 months.
Elegant, supple and complex. The essential Etna Rosso.
Girolamo Russo's 2015 Etna Rosso 'a Rina is 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio. This is a deep and layered red wine from Etna with a savoury and enriched flavour profile. The wine offers some barbecue smoke and campfire ash with dark berry fruit, balsam herb, licorice and tar. Mediterranean tones of rosemary and oregano also appear. The aromatic profile of this vintage stands apart from the rest due to its more savoury and almost meaty profile. 92 points, Wine Advocate (8/2017).
An exciting Etna Rosso showing shaved dark chocolate, chili, darker fruit tea elements, bark and rose stems. The palate is incredibly floral yet dense with a solid, velvety tannin structure, fresh acidity and a long, coffee-bean finish. 94 points, jamessuckling.com (10/2017).
