The soils across all three regions all have relatively low fertility to help curb the vigour of Sauvignon Blanc vines that dominate Marlborough. Although the region built its reputation on crisp, distinctively pungent unoaked Sauvignon Blanc, there is an increasing trend towards more complex barrel-ferment styles. Light-bodied, fruit driven Pinot Noir is also successful.

Winery FOXES ISLAND

John Belsham founded Foxes Island in 1992 on the Wairau Plains. Searching for a premium site for Pinot Noir he discovered a 20-hectare Awatere property in 1998, naming it Belsham Awatere Estate. The property has seven distinct terraces with exceptional soil profiles, planted primarily to Pinot Noir, with select blocks dedicated to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. Complete dedication to quality both in the vineyard and winery, together with John’s considerable winemaking talent ensures that Foxes Island produces some of the most compelling and expressive wines in Marlborough. A second range of wines made for earlier drinking called Fox by JB is also produced.
