Domaine de la Vougeraie Chambolle-Musigny is a delicate yet expressive Burgundy—light yet seductive, with aromas of rose petal and ripe Pinot Noir. A subtle minerality balances the fruit-forward palate.
Domaine de la Vougeraie was established by Jean-Charles Boisset in 1999. It is the result of his decision to consolidate the top tier of his family’s vineyards into a singular domaine.
Alfred Hitchcock adored Burgundy, his cellar in Bel Air, Los Angeles contained a lot, but it was Chambolle-Musigny that was his favourite and that made up the majority of his collection.
Regarded as producing some of the most elegant wines in the Côte de Nuits, with rich concentration of fruit - though they tend to be a little lighter in colour. The village has two Grand Cru vineyards, Musigny which is rich and silky and Bonnes Mares (shared with Morey-St-Denis) which is firmer and broader, with impeccable ageing potential.
The wines of Chambolle are first and foremost models of elegance and finesse. They have a medium robe and a generous nose of raspberries, strawberry confit, violets, and underbrush. The palate is market by fine tannins and a soft mouthfeel. They are not very acidic but rather make an impression by their fleshiness. The Premier Cru are more concentrated and are often quite firm. Some of the grand cru are powerful and robust (Bonnes Mares), while others are supple, voluptuous, and distinguished (Musigny).
Domaine de la Vougeraie, based in Premeaux just south of Nuits St Georges, was created in 1999 when Jean-Claude Boisset of the Boisset Group pulled together all of the various vineyard holdings which he had purchased over the years for his negociant business. The idea from the beginning was to create a no expenses spared domaine and Pascal Marchand - a native of Montreal who was the winemaker at Comte Armand at the time - was employed to not only make the wines but to oversee the conversion of Vougeraie's then 36ha to organic and then to biodynamic cultivation.
Marchand left in 2005 and Pierre Vincent's approach was to make less extracted and less oaky wines than his predecessor. While Vincent left in 2016 to join Domaine Leflaive, the winemaking team of François Lécaillon and general director Sylvie Poillot, have continued Vincent's gentler handling of the fruit while at the same time reducing the use of oak even more with only 25% new wood for the Grand Crus.
With 46 hectares of vineyard across 35 different appellations, including six grand crus (Musigny, Bonnes Mares, Clos Vougeot, Charmes Chambertin, Mazoyères, Corton, Corton Charlemagne, Bienvenues Batard, Batard Montrachet and Chevalier Montrachet) this important and large domaine keeps going from strength to strength.
