ABADIA RETUERTA Seleccion Especial, Castilla Y Leon 2013

Abadia Retuerta lies alongside Spain’s Duero River near Valladolid in ‘Old Castile’, north of Madrid. It’s a former convent and fortress, with extensive vineyards, dating back to the twelfth century, reborn as a luxury hotel (with a Michelin starred restaurant), and now also once again a revered name in Spanish wine. The Seleccion Especial, Abadia Retuerta’s best-known wine world-wide, is a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Shiraz and has built its reputation quickly since the 2001 vintage won the World’s Best Red Wine trophy at the International Wine Challenge in 2005. The appellation is Castilla y Leon. Dark red colour with a clean, fresh, complex nose. The palate is intensely fruity with 19 months in French and American oak barrels adding notes of cedar and black coffee. As the maker says: ‘It attacks the palate politely but firmly’.
