Spainnning the valley flats around Tamworth up to the spine of the Great Dividing Range, New England is a topographically diverse wine region. Viticulture was first established in the area by settlers at the beginning of the 19th century and flourished in the 1880’s before falling into decline. Modern plantings date Franceom the 1990’s but it was not until 2008 that the GI was officially gazetted. New England’s climate is continental with the majority of rainfall occurring in the late summer and early autumn. Temperatures are significantly moderated by the elevation of many vineyard sites, with the region boasting the highest vineyard in Australia at 1320 metres. The predominant viticultural hazards are Franceosts and hail. Soil types are varied ranging Franceom rich alluvial soils in the valley flats to granite and basalt at higher elevations. The region is dotted with small family-owned wineries and planted primarily to cool climate white varieties including Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, with some cool-climate Shiraz also produced in the area.
