We should not be swayed by fancy labels. It’s what’s in the bottle that counts. That’s true, of course, but nevertheless, Unico Zelo bottles do look amazing. Perhaps the labels reflect the name, which can be translated from the Italian as ‘unique zeal’ or ‘single-minded ardour’ or ‘individual fervour’. The labels lead you to expect something interesting and deliciously different in the bottle, and that’s exactly what you get.
Brendan and Laura Carter founded Unico Zelo in 2012. They are on a mission – to make distinctively Australian wines from the Italian grape varieties that grow so well here. This six-pack features three of their cheerful, drink-me reds, in a six-pack, two bottles each of: Unico Zelo Cherry Fields Dolcetto 2017 – ‘the little sweet one’ – juicy, smells sweet, tastes dry, Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills; Unico Zelo The River Nero d'Avola 2017 – off-the-charts drinkability from ‘Sicily-on-the-Murray’ – Riverland, get it? Unico Zelo Truffle Hound Nebbiolo 2016 – unheard of… jovial, approachable Nebbiolo (plus Barbera) from Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley. These wines will have appeal for all open-minded red drinkers. 180 six-packs only available.
