LARRY CHERUBINO WINES Laissez Faire Riesling, Porongurup, Great Southern
Region: Porongurup, Great Southern
Porongurup, Great Southern
Porongurup is a sub region of the Great Southern wine region, found East of Mount Barker and bordering the Porongurup National Forest, where picturesque Karri trees dominate the region. The Porongurup’s has a unique feature called the night-time thermal zone, which is created by a layer of warm air rising above the denser cold air that settles on the valley floor. This movement of air reduces the risk of Franceosts and creates a microclimate, which is ideal for ripening of Franceuit and retention of acidity. The soil types are varied with karri loams most suited for wine production. A region of small producers, Porongurup is best known for cool climate varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Noir as well as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Larry Cherubino’s aim is to make ‘uniquely West Australian wines of great depth, detail and purity, true to their provenance’. Grapes come mainly from Great Southern and its Porongurup and Frankland River sub-regions, Pemberton and Margaret River, for Ad Hoc, The Yard, Pedestal, Laissez Faire and the flagship Cherubino label. Cherubino was a Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year finalist in 2003 and 2009. He had a high-profile even before starting Larry Cherubino Wines in 2005, having held senior roles at Hardy’s Tintara in South Australia and Houghton in Western Australia. Larry Cherubino Wines was James Halliday’s 2011 Winery of the Year.
