VON BASSERMANN-JORDAN Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad Riesling, Pfalz <p>Bassermann-Jordan, with origins going back to 1718, is one of the leading producers of Germany’s Pfalz (or Palatinate) region, based in Deidesheim, with excellent vineyard holdings there and in the neighbouring villages of Forst, Ruppertsberg, Wachenheim, Königsbach and Niederkirchen.</p> <p>The Reiterpfad vineyard is 86ha, of which about 4ha -- with south-eastern exposure -- is owned by Bassermann-Jordan. The name Rider’s Path almost certainly indicates the land was crossed by mounted troops, traders and travellers, probably as far back as Roman times. The soil is sandy loam with deposits of both sandstone and limestone. The Riesling vines are organically grown.</p> <p>Reiterpfad Riesling has fine fruit and minerality. The grapes are hand-picked before fermentation in stainless steel containers. The nose typically has floral notes and exotic fruit flavours. The palate indicates a balanced wine with a fine sweetness-acid ratio and typical Riesling minerality. The aging potential Reiterpfad is 10 years.</p>

Region Pfalz

The Pfalz is a region of Germany that produces the largest volume of wine due to its warm summer climate and higher cropping vines grown on rolling hills and plains. The region runs parallel to the Rhine river and has 22,00 ha of vineyards spanning 80 km with a wide range of soil types. While it produces a high volume of everyday Qualitätswein “Liebfraumilch” style wines, the Pfalz also produces high quality Riesling that is typically full bodied and dry with ripe fruit characters and signature chalky minerality. In addition to Riesling, the Pfalz also has significant plantings of Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and the popular German red variety Dornfelder.

Bassermann-Jordan’s vineayards include some of the most notable winegrowing sites in the Pfalz. Covering more than 49 ha, their vineyard locations in Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg include 20 different single vineyard sites. A third of these vineyards are classified Grand Cru such as Hohenmorgen, Pechstein, and Jesuitengarten. These vineyards are organically farmed and winemaker Ulrich Mell focuses on spontaneous fermentation without artificial additives prior to lees ageing. In 1718, Pierre Jordan purchased the family's first vineyards in Pfalz. 65 years later, Johann-Peter Jordan built the winery in Deidesheim. Quality is a Jordan family tradition. Around 1800, Andreas Jordan was a part of the avant-garde of growers changed the face of viticulture in the Pfalz by planting single varieties by the vineyard.
