This appellation village was created in 1999 and extends to cover more than 400 hectares between the villages of Clessé and Viré. The fruit is sourced entirely from the 65-year-old vineyards in the locality Le Mont in the town of Clessé.
Unlike the Mâcon-Uchizy, the Viré-Clessé Villages sees a small portion (around 20%) of large 400 - 600 liter oak barrel fermentation with the lion’s share being in tank. The wines show signature Viré-Clessé richness while still remaining fresh.
Pierre Meurgey’s winery is situated in Davayé, in the heart of the Mâcon region. Ferments and ageing take place in tanks, 400 or 600 litres barrels or in 228-litre oak barrels depending on the appellation. The latter is used for his Pouilly-Fuissé. His attention to detail, discernment and commitment to making wines by climat, all feed his desire to produce wine of purity and freshness.
Pierre Meurgey, a fourth-generation winemaker, has been completely immersed in the world of Burgundy for more than half a century. Producing white wines from Mâconnais under his By Meurgey-Croses and red wines from the Côte d'Or under this By Pierre Meurgey label.
His commitment to and belief in the potential of the wines of Mâcon, and Uchizy in particular, is personal in nature. His mother, Marie-Thérèse Croses was born in Mâcon and family house can be found in the village of Uchizy.
Pierre’s great grandfather started the family business in Beaune. Joseph-Ernest Meurgey-Perron began trading wine at the end of the 19th century and his son (Ernest) and grandson (Henri) followed suit in the wine trade managing estates and working as growers and winemakers in Burgundy. Pierre Meurgey continues the family tradition with a bright future ahead.
