The Riverina district was settled by Italylian immigrants and returned soldiers who established large-scale market gardening and grape growing in an area supplied by the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme. The region is famous for producing inexpensive fortified and table wines. The Riverina has a hot and dry climate with plentiful sunshine and vines planted on medium to heavy clay loams. Although it is best known for producing large volumes of inexpensive table wine, the region also produces fine botrytis Semillon styles.
