Sweetly fruited and gorgeously complex, the wine shows ripe plum, dark cherry, vanilla, subtle spice, olive and cedar characters on the nose. The palate is equally impressive, displaying excellent concentration and intensity. It's soothing and comforting with seductive flavours and rich texture, finishing fabulously long and velvety. At its best: now to 2026.
95 points, Wine Orbit (March 2020)
Delicately-scented pinot noir with floral, violet, cherry, spice, anise and subtle savoury and dried herb flavours. An elegant, supple wine with a structure of fine tannins that suggests good cellaring potential.
94 points, The Real Review (February 2020)
Intensity, an immediacy and engaging bouquet with a red fruit and savoury core, some wild dry herb, red apple skin, cherry and intense minerality. The oak message is distinctive yet mild with a salted cashew nut and spice combination. On the palate - tense, youthful, firm, fruity, savoury and dry. All the flavours suggested on the nose come alive on the palate, but this wine also needs time to integrate more to find its true balance. Firm tannins and medium+ acidity offer a strong foundation. A lovely wine with medium-minus weight, but lovely intensity and flavour.

Grown at high altitude at Mt Barker, in the Wanaka sub-region, the 2018 vintage was designed as a 'highly drinkable wine of unthinkable quality'. Matured in French oak casks, it is bright ruby, attractively scented red, with strong, ripe, cherryish, spicy, nutty flavours, fresh acidity, and loads of drink-young charm.
4.5 stars, Buyer’s Guide to New Zealand Wines
Very attractive aromas of dried flowers and red cherries here. Leaves, too. This is complex and full of interest. The palate has a suave and succulent feel with very attractive, fine tannin and a sleek, chalky and gently crunchy feel. Deep, strong and quite structured finish. Great value.
93 points, JamesSuckling.com (August 2019)
Engaging and complex, the inviting bouquet shows red/black cherry, fragrant spice, thyme, nutmeg and floral characters. The palate is wonderfully weighted and rounded, delivering sweet berry flavours and silky texture, magnificently complemented by spicy nuances and fine tannins. Elegant, stylish and delicious.
95 points, Wine Orbit (September 2018)
From the remote, limestone-rich outpost of Waitaki, this has a cool and complex nose with baking spices and lightly peppery nuances, as well as coal smoke, wild red flowers, herbs and red berries. A neat palate, offering savory notes of dark stones and smoke and crisp, delicate, plaster-like tannins.

Pungently aromatic pinot noir with floral, rose petal and violet aromas occupying centre-stage with a mix of spice, cherry, berry and nutty oak playing a supporting role. A silken-textured wine with a lingering finish. Impressive and accessible with potential. Drink to 2028.
95 points, Real Review, January 2020
Wonderfully composed and expressed, the splendidly fragrant bouquet shows dark cherry, raspberry, toasted almond, dark spice and floral aromas, followed by a concentrated palate that’s refined and graceful. It’s elegant yet mouthfilling and generous within a beautifully proportioned frame, finishing impressively long and expansive.
95 points, Wine Orbit (December 2019)
An enticing bouquet with aromas of ripe red berry fruits and dried herb layered between scents of oak and toasty wood spices, a dark rose and earthy quality. On the palate - equally enticing with a core of pinosity centering on red berry and plum, dark florals and savoury undertones. Layers of oak and baking spices adding depth and complexity. Firm youthful tannins with a chalk-like texture, plenty of acidity and overall solid structure. Lengthy, detailed and dry finish. Decant for service - slightly cooler than you might ordinarily prepare a Pinot Noir - and enjoy from today and through 2026.

Giant Steps via Central Otago? Giant Leaps, though Tasmania is under their charter now too of course. Produced at Maude winery with guidance from Steve Flamsteed. It’s 100% whole bunch, which is a bit wild for Central Otago. Tosq is also an organic (certified) vineyard, as is Maude production, as is Giant Steps winery, so organic appears on label with force.
Peppery/brambly characters seasoning ripe red cherry fruit – a pretty start. Lots of scent. Bright flavours, pretty here too, satiny texture with cool red cherry fruit characters, lick of cranberry, splash of tangy pomegranate, lively feel and a creep of firm tannins for shape. A vibrant and lifted CO pinot. It’s amazing how outsiders interpret the region and seem to excel. Really lovely wine, is the message anyway.

Central Otago, located at the southern end of the South Island of New Zealand, is the world’s most southerly wine region. In a short amount of time, the area has established itself as a world-class region for Pinot Noir. The picturesque region is surrounded by mountains ensuring a cool semi-continental climate that experiences a large diurnal range contributing to the creation of intensely concentrated wines with perfume, and complexity. Central Otago’s vineyard area is divided into six distinct sub regions each with their own climate and wine style. Best known for producing intensely Fruity medium to full bodied Pinot Noir, Central Otago’s cool climate also produces outstanding Riesling as well as superb bottle-fermented Sparkling wines.
