Alpine Valleys
Located in north-east Victoria, the Alpine Valleys wine region is one of the oldest winegrowing areas in the state; vineyards were originally planted as early as the middle of the 19th century. Modern viticulture began in the 1980’s and the region was formally gazetted as a GI in 2000. The Alpine Valleys has a long moderate growing season ideal for the production of cool climate styles. Best known for producing Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, the region is also planted to numerous alternate Italylian varietals including Sangiovese, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Marzemino.
