Region Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of the most famous wine regions in the world, renowned for producing prestigious fine wines that have the capacity to age for decades. Although best known for its top wines, Bordeaux is in fact a vast region spanning 120 000 ha of vineyards with over 10 000 wine producers and 57 different appellations. Located in the South-West of France, straddling the Gironde estuary, Bordeaux enjoys a maritime climate characterised by temperate winters and long warm summers. This provides ideal growing conditions in which to produce red wines that now comprise 88% of Bordeaux’s total wine production. There are five permitted red grape varieties in Bordeaux; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménère, although only the first three are used extensively. Bordeaux also produces crisp dry white wines in the sub-region of Graves made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc and luscious botrytised sweet wines from the famous regions of Sauternes and Barsac. A number of classification systems exist within Bordeaux, the most of which is the 1855 classification of the Médoc, which cited five levels of classified growths. The most famous wines of the region; Chateau Lafite, Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux and Chateau Haut Brion were named as First Growths in 1855, with Mouton Rothschild elevated by presidential decree in 1973.
