Padthaway was originally covered by a sea, evident by the limestone bedrock and marine fossils found under the red clay loams. In the 1800’s it was prime pastoral land and the region’s name came about when a Scottish immigrant, named his lease ‘Padthaway Station’. Modern day viticulture began in 1963 with well-known names including Seppelt, Lindemans, Hardys and Wynns all establishing vineyards in the region during the sixties. Situated on the Limestone Coast, Padthaway is dotted with pockets of terra rossa soil and red brown loams. The cooling maritime climate provides ideal ripening conditions for a number of varieties including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
